OT: was the GAF film not properly cleared and has just gotten fogged or something else? I've only used B&W GAF was there also color? I love shooting this old stock of GAF that I have and it would be good to know now if something about it won't hold up... haha. Thanks.

Some were processed by GAF, some I processed myself, I have bulk rolls of frozen GAF 100 and 200 with 4 16oz kits, I had forgotten how may steps, including reexposure, the GAF system used until I shot a few rolls and need to process. GAF was more like E 4.

I looked at my 3M slides last night, sorry I cant scan, but they are just as they were the day I shot them, very clean, good grain, I have both 100 and 400, I dont recall the 3200.

Ferrania have just confirmed (by email) that large format sizes would be available as well.

Awesome news! I just hope they don't over extend themselves. Even before Kodak's prices went to newly insane levels, 4x5 color sheet film was expensive (though not so much back in the 90s when I started with 4x5) and I tend to shoot color in a roll film back when my lenses allow framing the shot that way. I'd rather they produce a few popular sizes they can sell enough of at first than dilute sales with too many sizes they can't sell enough of.

Of E6?? Someone pinch me!

They're either visionary, a little mad, or both.

Stone,
You can increase saturation of slide film (this is true of E-6 as well as it was of Kodachrome) with slight underexposure. By "slight" I mean 1/3 to 1/2 stop.If you go beyond 1 stop then it's just plain underexposed (unless the underexposed look is what you're going for).

Calibrate your pre-flash to bring up your shadow detail, underexpose 1 stop, get a 1 stop push.

I'm only vaguely familiar with pre flash techniques, and I thought this was only done with B&W ... I do have a 4x5 now so I can try learning this pre-flash thing, but I'll have to figure out how to do it first and I think I'll start with just learning the camera first haha.

Thanks though, anything special I need to know for color transparency pre-flash?

^^^ In New York, they say the main thing is don't button your trench coat.

I wouldn't know, I live in CT :munch:

Hey, a question for you:

If part of the Atlantic falls between Long Island and Connecticut, does it make a sound?

We are REALLY OT at this point, so I'll just hope that Ferrania makes a beautiful E-6 and I can catch the moment when the tides rise and the sound disappears and there's nothing to hear but the click of the shutter

I know this issue merely interests anyone here at Apug, but it has been reported by the press that Ferrania employees have not got wages for months now.

Suffer for the art of film ....

This is sarcasm. But explains how they plan to afford the production of E-6

But seriously this isn't good. Not a good sign nor a good start. I hope it is sorted out...

Stone, I was referring to Ferrania Technology not Film Ferrania. The latter is an entity only known at forums as ours...

A blog was added to the Film Ferrania site: Dead Link Removed

So far it only contains that text already shown here in post #41.

But, let's have a look at that site in the weeks to come.

I take the stand that who is able to engineer colour-films, which are based on seperate layers similar to those monochrome films, is also able to engineer classis monochrome films.

I wasn't saying they couldn't, just about the wisdom of entering a niche market where there is only probably room for a limited number of players. But ho, hum, what will be, will be.

As someone with little understanding of markets and such things, why would this be bad for other manufacturers? I've always thought that competition is a healthy thing for a market.

I would agree that's usually the case, but B & W is now a niche market, and if there are too many firms competing in it, you could have a situation where none of them can make a reasonable profit. So I hope the new Ferrania will concentrate on colour, where our choices seem to be reducing rapidly. With B & W there are still lots of options, despite the loss of some old favourites.

If Ferrania did bring back some of the ancient types of B&W I'd certainly give them a try. But it would be extra shooting, not reducing my support of Ilford products for "important" work.

I think if they come out with an E-6 product they should have a "kit" package since proper E-6 kits are hard to come by in many areas, providing that would be a huge boost over buying fuji E-6 or even other C-41 films... opinion for sure but still, a viable option, include a box of concentrated packets and 4x5 E-6 film and you're in business...

Some good news to hear. If they are able to position themselves well, we can have a winner.

Assuming they have the very same machinery, the formulas on hand and the technicians that worked on it. It should seemingly be "straightforward" to begin production again. It's amazing how complex it is, as they state being on R&D, for sure reformulating but perhaps they are getting their old emulsions a leap forward.

As of formulas, should one want to produce eg. Ektachrome 100G but on their premises; Is the formula public? I recall PE writing something about working on Gold 400 and how he had the formula. IIRC, this was one of the major resource hogs, reformulating. A sad outcome of a (probable) exit of the big two would be the technology loss on how their films are way advanced given the huge R&D they have benefited for decades.

...We could recover the old plan of keeping PE in a barn for our own coating; but instead sending him to italy, for a holiday...

It's not just Italy, it's the Italian Riviera! I think PE might be quite all right with this plan, assuming he didn't yield to the temptation to wander over to Monte Carlo and lose the startup capital at the baccarat tables...

News from Italy ! ScotchChrome 100 improved to be remanufactured first : Dead Link Removed

Awesome news - and they point out it was available before in three speeds. The 800 was pretty darned grainy IIRC, don't know about the 640 but if they could, after the 100, market a 640 slide film with good image charateristics and controlled grain that would be MOST welcome, at least by me.

Great news.
I can guess cine people will be happy as they can fill the niche left by ektachrome for reversal MP, S8 and 16mm.

Oh, and let's see what improvements to the original Scotchrome are brought.
