Field notes?

Here is a scan of my negative envelop for the above image. Development info on it, as well as printing dates (can be tied to printing data that way). Bottom right corner -- suggestions (P for print in platinum, and B for possible negative bleaching -- which I did not do).

Nothing is perfect, of course. I did not record the actual date, but it is the first week of April 2018 for sure -- the month of my artist-in-residence in Zion. I did not write down about guessing on the darkest light values, but might add that now while the memory of taking the image is still strong enough. Also attached is the camera set-up for the Zion image.

"If I had used a filter, I would have made note of it. The most important info for me is the SBR -- scene brightness range (that 10 to 15 above) and where I exposed within that range. That will give me all the info I need to determine processing (which developer, dilution, time, temp, and aggitation) for the print I want to make in whatever process I will be using."

All good, and btw, I'm gonna give Rite-in-the-rain a try. Studying how you use this... as typically i try to record too much and then end up recording too little.

"I transfer the info onto the paper envelopes the negatives are stored in. Also included on the envelope is the development info, and the negative's printing history. In theory...if I remember to do it.

I gather the "transfer" is another by hand and not simply ripping pages out of the book. I've been using some invitation envelopes... which aren't really the light safe sort I should be using. I know some folks use their empty Kodak/Ilford film boxes. If you don't mind my asking, what sorts envelopes are you using? I think about those old brown/yellow envelopes with the brad closures, but haven't gone there yet.

I use little notebooks to recored time and place of the photoshoot and the tech info of the camera (time, f-stop) and film/filmholder (A/B side 1/2), and further I glue in those books little prints from my shutter speed tester:

This is my source of the negative envelopes. They run a little over a dollar each for 8x10 -- I will often put two to four related negatives in one envelope. As seen above, I write all the info on the envelope. Not cheap, but the system is working well.

These are all great idea. I've been using a PDF staple bound doc I've made myself. TOO big, but it's been okay. Looking to up my game to a more do-able approach. Thanks for all your help! And Vaughn... great find in Conservation Resources. Thanks for that.

For general info...besides the envelopes for film, they also make them with an additional fold for storing glass plates (1/16" or 1/8" spacing in the folds).

Take notes and shoot film? I can only do four things at once.
Like Doremus, I'm blessed with OCD, but it doesn't extend to note-taking while burning a few sheets of FP4.
My film holders all have notches, so I know if any of them start acting up, but I don't take notes unless I'm comparing lenses.

I make iphone photos - one of the scene, one of the camera and film holder (which has a number and film type on it), and one of the meter... This records the date and time and location as well. Later (over coffee), I type it all up in a database, and print the entry card to go with the neg. This has worked well for years because I always have my phone, but never the patience to write notes in the field.
