Has anyone used the fluid mount from Epson and what are your thoughts on its effectiveness and will it work with 4990 scanner? Thanks.

If you are talking about the Epson fluid tray from the V7xx/V8xx, it is going to be too thick and thus not suspend the film in the optimum film suspension plane for best focus on a 4990.

Yes, sorry for not being clear (I didn't think there was another type made by Epson). Given this and that I have a "cheap" 4990 (as in not-paid all that much for it, hence willing to do some hacking) is there a way to adjust lens position so it focuses on a different plane?

These scanners aren't scientific grade, so the lens height from the factory actually vary some.

However you'll have to test that yourself, the glass fluid tray for one person might be perfect, for another it might be off.

There is no way to adjust the lens height, only the film plane height.

Remember there are two lenses that focus at two different heights so be sure to select the ideal one for your scanning process. But yea, you sometimes have to shim the holders to get proper height, and Betterscanning holders are much better than the Epsom ones for adjustment.

Good luck,
