A large sheet of plexiglass (or other ridged sheet good), pain into into the developing tray, with chemical, which rest on it when allowed, but otherwise floats above the bottom, could also use rust proofed bankers 's clips at the far, wide paper 's margin, could keep paper flat, for thin or exlarge sheets or transferring to other trays, or a 'waterfall' washing setup, even an archival washer tank, might serve some well.

I have some large trays, but a small space in which to work, so I might give this a try, maybe, but I'll bet tears wrinkles and folds would be a rare thing!

Large trays were once available with drain valves. These can be added afterwards, but need to be the right kind, with a gasket system able to seal even holes in polyethylene trays. Scientific supply houses carry these.

I have a Jobo siphon that I used for my Jobo processor. When I sold my Jobo, I kept the siphon and it works well with my wash tray. Before the Jobo siphon I just used a large plastic hose that I sucked on to start the siphon action.
Don't think that I would try that technique with a tray of chemicals though 🤮

I use a JOBO and because it lives near a sink, I fill the tank with a short piece of hose with a push on adapter to connect onto the supply and fill to the required depth. I empty it in the reverse sequence by connecting it to the supply and adding a little more water then turning off the supply and pulling the hose off the supply then with the tasil end of the pipe so by using the hose to syphon off the JOBO contents
