My former unit in the Royal Marines, 4/2 Commando was inspected by her majesty in the early 1960s, I noticed she was a very beautiful young woman who had a lovely clear complexion and rather large feet.

I caught some of the memorial service this morning (US time) my how beautiful the services are. The archers with their long bows my favorite. This will be a once in a century event.
All my ancestors came from England, Scotland, Ireland and Germany. I have my Great Great Grandfather's citizenship papers where he renounced any loyalty to the King of England, (I don't think that's required today with dual citizenship).

It's not often I would agree with anything Boris Johnson said, but I think he was right in saying she should go down in history as Elizabeth the Great.

I don't think as many people will show up or care. I'm a staunch anti-monarchist across the pond and I'm paying attention. Once Liz is out of sight and mind so will go the royals.

We get good value out of remaining connection to the monarchy here in Canada. Having eleven representatives of our head of state, all of whom are locally based, and all of whom are mostly symbolic but still critical in case of one particular type of deadlock, works quite well.

It won't be the same. Elizabeth was truly remarkable. I wouldn't have lasted a year faced with her service. I wish Charles well, I think he can do A Lot of good. He's been an advocate for many good things.
I wonder if his majesty will be taking over the Leicas?

Funny story. My dad brought me into his office to have "the talk" about sex. Little did he know I was already quite experienced Anyway he sat me down, he looked all serious and then he imparted his worldly wisdom. All he said was "marry a gal with big feet when compared to the rest of her body". That was it. Talk over.

I guess I should have given the Queen's beau a run for his money!

Point well taken. Although there may be some difference between talking about politics and talking about governmental structures.
I'm sure you will understand why when I now hear "God Save the King" it gives me a start!
I've lived my entire life with the Crown being more of an institution and a symbol than an individual.
Which paradoxically made it possible to think of Elizabeth II more as an individual, who fills a role.
We actually have on our walls some delightful photos of Princess Elizabeth and Philip in Ontario in, I think 1951. I expect she was dedicating a new hydroelectric dam in Ontario at the time, because they came to me through my late uncle, who was chief staff photographer for Ontario Hydro.

Her death at 96 is sad, but not tragic.

And addressing all the superior Court justices as "Your Lordship" or "Your Ladyship" - somehow easier than referring to Justices of the Peace (and mayors) as "Your Worship".
It tends to reinforce the view of it being more an institution and a symbol than a bunch of individuals with responsibilities but little in the way of direct power.

Thank you, as most I have never seen. But I knew the Westminster Abbey one by Beaton, and found it irritating from the forst glance on.

That she went ahead with Calder in that Balmoral photograph likely shows how shew was ticking.

I am being respectful. I do not have the emotional attachment that people in UK and Commonwealth have, but I am still interested in the discussion, just not emotionally. When I traveled through Europe in 1966 the British youth shared their greatly varied opinions with me and I saw many many view points.

The monarchy is a far more polarizing in countries that have constitutional monarchy, except Canada evidently.

Sure, a Grandmother died. Her family is grieving.

At the same time a Queen kicked the bucket. It's an interesting historical event. 'Long Live The King' sounds like it should belong at a renaissance faire rather then shouted out in the street. It's odd sounding to mine ears. I'm not a #lizzysinabox or condemning the deceased Queen for being the worst person ever. She did the best she was able with what she was given and softened the look of a monarchy very skillfully. Will Chuck ruin 70+ years of goodwill? Nah. He'll shuffle off the coil and Billy will take over.
