I was going to suggest that it was a negative version of Kodachrome as a reply to someone's question yesterday but then I thought better of it.

I think it is probably a fair description of it though.

I am waiting as fast as I can. If I like it, I will save the UC 400 120 for only the really special times.

Portra NC or VC would(and is)be my first choice for portraits.Of the various threads I've read-with photo samples- on Ektar,the consensus is that the film gives acceptable results w/skintones.Kodak says the film can be used for fashion photography so there is a people connection for you.I intend to use this for various outdoor subject matter.

way to go Kodak!!

I've been using the 35mm version for a few months now and really like it. I can make nice 11x14 prints off the 35mm negatives with a very acceptable level of grain and sharpness. I much prefer medium format though so you can bet I'll be buying it in 120 rolls instead as soon as it is available.

This is good news. I'll pick up a pro-pack of it as soon as it's available. (I'll make it 220 if they do that, too.)

Now we can just hope for sheet sizes. I can't wait to compare it to the Fuji Pro160S, which is my standard color negative film. I never bothered getting a roll in 35mm because I mainly shoot 6x7 and 4x5.

The great thing about the 120 size is that, if they follow the price model of 35mm, we will have a really sweet pro-level colour film for much less than the (albeit excellent) Portra line.

Might spell the end of the line for Portra VC, but we'll see.

If so maybe they'll build an ektar 320 or 400iso film -- UC 400 was, to my eye, everything VC was supposed to be. NC with an ektar complement would be very nice. I'll be buying some as soon as...

As far as is understood this film is essentially Ektar 25 with a 2 stop speed boost and some color tweaking.

I too wonder if it's possible to make a microfilm-like color film for people who just don't need the speed.

This could breath new life into a lot of MF gear flooding the market, for a lot of prosumer types who are put off by $3-8K pricetags of 24MP DSLRs. I'm certainly jazzed and will be trying some in my Pentax 645n.

Never shot 35mm Ektar 25 back in the day because then I was shooting for the magazine market with K64 and, later, Velvia. What I do seem to recall of Ektar was that along with almost imperceptible grain it had almost as narrow an exposure latitude as transparency film, and the dynamic range was similar to slide film as well (5 stops max)... is this true of the new Ektar 100 version as well? Reciprocity characteristics would be another issue I'd like to hear more about. (Portra 160 emulsions are considered to be rather bulletproof in these regards, no?)

It's supposed to be an entirely new film while it might have been designed to have some similar features to the original Ektar 25 it's based on newer technologies that only came into use after Ektar 25. The slow ISO of Ektar 25 was a major disadvantage of the film, but the higher speed of the Ektar 100 will make a very significant difference.

I used Ektar 25 a few times it was an excellent film, however in the typical light levels in the UK it was really only a good weather film, the new Ektar 100 will be more practical particularly as it's reported to be better than the original Ektar.
