Ektachrome E100 test rolls are OUT

Kodak Professional yesterday posted some instagram videos of the bricks of 10, 135-36 Ektachrome E100 rolls that have been sent out to some photographers to try as test rolls.

And before you all MF and LF shooters start whining about no 120, 4x5 or 8x10 or whatever, they have clearly stated they have not tried to make that yet because MF and LF transparency film require different film bases to 35mm, and that if they see the 35mm is taken up well by the market they will most likely expand it to other formats.

If you mean like mailers no and they probably won't, but don't quote me on this i beleive they were interviewed and have talked about starting to make E-6 chemicals again? not sure.

Kodak seems to have contracted out production of many chemicals to someone in Germany. So they could distribute something from the same supplier under the Kodak name.

And it's a very big 'if' too. I understand that some of the Beta testers believe E100 to be a C-41 film!!

There is still the sticky problem of where to get E6 processing, if not DIY. We do not have processing hassles here in Oz, though I appreciate the situation is more problematic in many parts of the US.

The new kid on the block will probably touch down here in Australia in the early Summer, after the 3 month Beta test window ends. Upon retail release, we'll spin a box out in parallel against RDPIII and a 2004-vintage E100VS in real world landscape imaging.

E6 chemistry is going to require some serious cooperation between Kodak Alar is andEastman Kodak if they intend to bring back Kodak branded stuff.
At present, all still film Kodak chemicals are marketed by Kodak Alar is.
Any Kodak chemicals related to motion picture films are marketed by Eastman Kodak.
Neither Kodak manufactures any of those chemicals.

I also wonder how they'll read and react to any early spike in demand if there is one. For example, for myself I expect I'll try at least a roll or two for the novelty but not sure past that as I don't shoot e6 at the moment.

Indeed, count me among the people who will buy a couple of rolls to try it and see how it compares to Ektachrome and Kodachrome of the past. But I haven't shot slides since 2004 and don't have any imminent travel plans that would be suitable for some special photography. So my two rolls may well sit in my fridge until February when I am probably visiting Malta....where I really can see myself shooting slides.

After that, I will probably replenish my two rolls and quite possibly not shoot them for another year. I would love to have the option, and processing isn't a problem in the UK as long as I'm happy to mail my films away (though I have done E6 myself in the past). I do wonder if there will be an initial spike followed by a slow but steady demand. Can EK/KA work with that? IF they release E100 in super 8, again I'll be buying the occasional cartridge.

I agree, be patient, and Kodak knows that if they price it outrageously high it will not sell.
T-Max P3200 was a nice surprise regarding the price, it's not bad.

I’m not being pessimistic, just being a realist and considering exactly the evidence and information provided. I’d be a real believer if a couple of rolls showed up in my mailbox!

This makes no sense whatsoever. Demand for 35mm film in no way indicates how much demand there will be for large format. The markets are completely different.

It's like saying Honda will decide whether or not to build a new motorcycle depending on how well the Civic sells.

Kodak closed down their chemical business long ago. They make nothing. Instead they license their name to those who do.

Judging from a reply like this, demand for Ektachrome will be tepid at best.

In reality, it's the motion picture sales which will define whether or this film is a success.

Still no sign, or even mentioning of the new Super 8mm camera. The $2700 camera that is.

Come on people, stop moving the goalposts. Kodak made the film and it is in the hands of photographers. I don't think I'll ever shoot it but it's great news for film, it's not all doom and gloom.

I just looked at the Instagram stories of one of the photographers and he showed himself loading the film. Maybe you want to argue they rolled Provia into their cassettes...

No, I wouldn’t argue (or even suggest) that. But thanks for such an insulting suggestion. Apparently I didn’t see that video. I only saw one that was unboxing the film and saw no option to see more videos. Mea culpa.

But as I said early... I’d be a real believer (and a cheerleader) if they put a roll or two in my mailbox like they did when Portra was being rolled out.

I agree, i've said in the past that on this forum people manage to complain and whine and make everything, even exciting good news out to be doom and gloom on this forum...
It's really depressing so i try and be as inactive as possible on here

Actually, there would likely be more support on the forum if the marketing interaction was a bit more direct and less cryptic.

I shoot film specifically because it gives me a happy feeling. Digital gives me an at work feeling which is good too but not the same.

No matter what roll - who made it, how old, what kind - loaded into a camera makes me feel good. I don't get this exact feeling from much else. It's a sunny positive thing for me.

Let's keep positive about our negatives. (ugh, sorry)
