ok...at approx 40g/liter the sodium sulfite definitely makes the negatives a bit less dense/less fog

still wet...so only had a quick peek

did a test with & without a small amount of calcium ascorbate

was assuming I'd end up with sodium ascorbate in solution & a precipitate of calcium carbonate...

there did seem to be a white precipitate...but no change in development...

does calcium ascorbate simply not work at ALL...or did I use too little? it was also old and off-white...not really brown...but not white either

the most recent item on the menu was 500ml pineapple juice with 2 tbsp sodium carbonate with 0.25g KBr

it was then divided into two portions...one of which got 1/4 teaspoon of calcium ascorbate

Tri-x developed for one hour....looked great...but no difference between the two

gonna try again tonight but with ascorbic acid

I'm a pretty good cook as well. Most Organic Chemists and Chemical Engineers that I know like cooking on days off. However, I prefer a Pina Colada rather than a Pina Ascorbate! Too sour.

I enjoyed working in the lab just as you have been doing but with conventional (read - salable) chemicals to make new developers, fixes, bleaches, blixes, hardeners and stabilizers. Lots of fun.

meant to test with 1/4 tsp ascorbic acid per 250ml of dev....did 1 tsp by mistake...dropped dev time in half to 30 min and WOW...finally real solid black...neg looks great

negs developed in same dev but w/o AA look thin but fine otherwise since they were underdeveloped

My wife's lasagna is the best I have ever eaten! At a KRL party at our home, several people asked for more and more and more until we ran out. Black Russians didn't hurt though!

I can report that aquarium dechlorinating drops do seem to fix film...but it took about an hour before I noticed the film clearing...

so...clearly not a practical option...but....if you're super desperate and don't mind buying about 50 tiny bottles and waiting several hours...I guess you could do it

I looked into the composition of various water dechlorinating liquids, and there appears to exist a range of products - some of them useful for our purpose here, others not. Those which appear to work as fixers contain Sodium Thiosulfate, which is far less soluble than Ammonium Thiosulfate. You'd have to use it diluted no more than 1:1 in order to get reasonable fixing speeds.

I tested 2 different brands undiluted...one worked VERY slowly....the other didn't seem to work at all

pool supply places sell what seems to be pure sodium thiosulfate powder....

I stopped myself from ordering from the pool supply place because I was reminded of something a boat designer once said...I forget his name, but a successful boat designer was saying that he likes to divide his time equally between sailing boats, designing them, and building them...he said when he builds a boat his goal is to build the boat quickly so he can start sailing it...he said some boatyards are full of people who stretch out their boatbuilding projects for years & sometimes never finish them because they want to make everything on the boat themselves...a syndrome he called the "I even make my own shoelaces disease".....so for know I'm not gonna try to make homemade fixer, although the temptation is there

Well, this wouldn't be "homemade fixer" anyway, because all these pool support products provide you with is a source of Thiosulfate. Getting one of these products may be easier on a weekend than getting regular fixer, but other than that it's the same chemical compound doing the fixing work.

Turmeric develops film!!!...took 2 hours and the film has a strong orange tint

might be perfect for a reversal process...nice orange slides

well...seems that the brightly colored circumin in turmeric is photosensitive....it fades when exposed to bright light:

OK...so if dopamine, L-dopa, and andrenaline are catecholamines....and catechol has some toxicity issues...I'm wondering wouldn't L-dopa, for example, be safer than catechol?

and what are the issues with catechol other than dermatitis?

it would be interesting if these catecholamines developed like catechol but were safer

Many people have the impression that if a compound already exists in your body then it can't be all that harmful. If you compare the MSDS of Catechol with that of L-Dopa, you can see that

Catechol is problematic with regard to skin exposure. Apparently it is absorbed by skin and causes trouble there.
L-Dopa is "Very hazardous in case of ingestion", but less of a problem with skin adsorption.

I guess there isn't really all that much advantage to L-Dopa, and in terms of cost it appears to be inferior to Catechol.
