Don DeGroat 17 May 1949 - 14 February 2014

(there was a url link here which no longer exists)

It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of Don DeGroat after a short illness. Don passed away at his home with his wife, Pat, by his side on 14 February 2014.

Don was a good friend, passionate photographer and skilled darkroom printer. I met Don here on APUG a few years ago and we've since talked on a regular basis. Don was always eager to share his wisdom and knowledge about photography, darkroom printing and life. Photography and printing was a passion of Don's until the the end, I recall on the last day we talked, he expressed his disappointment (but not resentment) at not getting the chance to print that day. He was a firm believer in the quality of a well made fiber print. I regret not having the opportunity to meet him in person. Don might not have been the most active poster on APUG, but he loved this forum a lot.

My deepest sympathy and condolences goes out to his friends and family, especially Pat, his wife, who had kept me updated on Don's health during his last days.

I will dearly miss my friend.

To Don

I will miss you my friend, I will miss your chats, your silly jokes, and all that
I will never forget the kindness and friendship you extended to me
All the wisdom and knowledge you so freely and passionately shared
I will miss the good advice, I will even miss the odd arguments we had
You are free now, free from the pain of this world
May your memory remain deep within those you knew you
May your light shine forever more though your safelight is now forever off
May your your laughter forever be a song, though your F5's shutter is now silent
Rest in peace Don, my friend, my brother, my mentor
Rest in peace

I'm so sorry to hear of Don's death. I was reading only yesterday a post of his regarding a Canadian Collective, I think it was. The message he wrote gave clear evidence of a generous man who loved photography and printing in particular and enjoyed sharing that love with others.
My deepest sympathy to his wife, family and friends.

Sincerely,
Molli

I'm very sorry to hear this. I always enjoyed his contributions, both in threads, and the gallery. I recall him posting rather recently, so this comes as a shock.

I am so sorry to hear this. I had wanted to meet Don and see his work, as I have a connection to his area of Ontario.

WHAT??!! I just corresponded with him the other day. Man, that's too bad. I hate that.

Great guy with lots of heart, and a sense of humor of equal size. I got to talk on the phone with him a few times and it was always a pleasure, and never less then a hour. The man saw great talent in my work and help sculpt my prints in the process.

The man will be missed.

Will now go print in honor.

This type of news is always sad to hear. RIP Don, and my condolences to his family and friends.

I always enjoyed Don's postings on here...I hope he's enjoying his complimentary 2000 square foot darkroom in peace, up at the big studio in the sky.

How sad! We corresponded quite a bit in the past and were looking forward to meeting in person one day. A printing session in his honor....

Oh man this is so sad, of all the people on APUG he and I talked the most, we spoke on the phone many times as we had plans to snuggle Cibichrome/Ilfochrome chemicals over the Canadian boarder (and I mean I would smuggle) and then finish off the last of his Cibichrome paper that he had stock in.

He was going to take me through the whole process, and as always money and time kept me away. He was such a good guy, always giving and just loved printing.

*sigh* so sad...

Last we spoke (a few weeks ago) he had told me the health issues he had were subsiding, but I guess it came back... So sad, he will be missed....

so sorry to hear this. i used to chat with don in the chatroom from time to time.
i would have loved to have met him in person.
RIP my condolences to his friends and family

Very sad news, always enjoyed his participation here. RIP Don.

I'm also shocked and saddened to hear this. RIP Don.

Thank you, Don.
