Women are wiser than we think and usually they are correct in what they say. We (men) tend to forget that or even think otherwise. Even when they go mad they do forgive and understand. If she says there are too many cameras she will have a good point and is proberly correct.
Women may have too many shoes but it is part of there identity. Cameras etc. may be part of the identity of men, but women also wear shoes for men, to look good. Men don't have cameras for their wives, we may brag with them but I would say it is more souly for us.
I believe Philippe-Georges above has a few good points. She may reconize a problem clearer and better than a man. I would rather give my money to women than a man.

Women are carrying the world's wisdom, they pass it on, more or less, to the world.
Men spoil that wisdom, time after time, and to cover that men oppress women...
As a father, I finally got aware of that, but why it took so long?

I don't like that remark...

I understand why you'd say that, but your initial statements - as well as Andreas T's - do show a strong feminist bias... to the point of being rediculously untrue.

Lets not let this get ugly ok.
I would not say it is feminist bias, I would like to say to be open to what women say or think. Why do you mean rediculously untrue? It is difficult to state my point of view in writting in English. Anyway IMO men get very edgy and nervous (like a short agressive attention span) when listening to a women. I do all the time, we need to try and listen. Both sides should be objective, women also misunderstand men. Women may be vain sure, but we do want that often. Do you not think if we are true to ourselves we only want them to be vain. Who wants to talk to a women? This may be a hard statement but I think there is a bit of trouth there. (I am going to regret this)

In fact you are giving them to Frau Merkel

IMO Woman want to look good for the benefit of their own vanity and especially insecurity, not "for men". They certainly don't wear high heels out of generosity toward men (who normally don't care a fig about heels, and care about other stuff, for which many woman are not just as generous :w00t:smile:.

I think it was Schiller who said something like: "Men desire woman; woman desire men's desire".

You seem to have some kind of a feminist bias. Don't worry. Certainly some black slaves were pro-slavery, after all :D

It may be that she is doing a good job we will see about that.
Sometimes this shoe handbag stuff damn that can be a pain. Then again all this tech talk about cars too. If we started giving a fig about heels etc. we may start realising in a part why they do it and it can be an enrichment for men. It was and is for me. We do not see what women wear, we just look at there "assets", but those hidden things which women use to make themselves more attractive shows the true power of women. We do not even get it.
But to tell the truth I agree with Schiller at the end of the day.
P.S. my girlfriend is sitting next to me!

No, there will be no ugliness and you shouldn't regret anything except that it may be inappropriate in this context. Let me be clear: I think your opinion is valid even though I disagree. But I think opinions on that topic have no place in this forum. So believe what you will, but making generic statements like that is rediculously untrue -- meaning not all women ... and not all men ...

And every time you say "we" this and "we" that... you should make sure you say "I". Your attitude seems, IMO, a lot less experienced and mature than it will be after you are married for a while and walked a few more miles on the face of this earth. IMHO, of course, and with no disrespect intended.

Let's talk photography.

There might be a few (good-)reasons why your wife would not accept you buying an other camera.
She might have other, more important, priorities or items to spend money on:
- a baby coming its way, something that costs hands full of money, she thinks you might have 'forgotten' that
- a new or safer car to take the kids to school
- a new washing machine, clean underwear and ditto baby clothes are important too!
- redecorating, a cosy house is nice for the whole family (and feeding the baby)
- the heating boiler is aging
- she thinks that you should invest in something really useful, what ever that might be (for the baby)
- the threat of the economical crisis is coming in closer and closer
- the mortgage (rent) that is becoming more and more difficult to pay (see above)
- her job is insecure (and she didn't dear to tell you) (see above)
- keep something for bad times to come (see above)
- she finally might want something nice, and less down to earth, for her self too (becoming a mother is ruining your body shape...)
- she doesn't like the kind of pictures you take, you might change you style first...
- she want you to be more kind and attend full to her
- she thinks that you love more these camera's than you love her...
- she thinks that you already have enough spend on those damned camera's: "...now, do something good, get out and shoot!!!..."

Be happy with the new baby and forget that Hasselblad (and see that quote below)!

... she just wants to be the boss of you just because she thinks that she can. Be happy with the new baby and buy that Hasselblad!

Women think that they are wiser. That is not always the case.

I would rather keep the money for myself, thus earn the woman's respect in my self confidence.

My late wife was a packrat, she saved Yarn! She also had three knitting machines, but she bought yarn faster than she could use it. After she died, I learned to use the machines, I can knit myself (and friends) really nice sweaters. I now have a girl friend, she does complain about my many cameras, she thinks that film is so out of it, wants it now!. I do have a D700, she likes it more than I, so she uses it and I get to use my Rollei, Leicas, and other film cameras to my heart's delight.

I don't like that remark...

Sorry if the message went through as something offensive. I did not mean to offend at all.

One day maybe somebody will found the "Men Liberation Front" and only then the real apostolate will begin, to make men conscious of their stolen rights and of the exploitation a feminist society exercise on them. In this sense, I hope one day you will become conscious of the state in which you are kept

Some examples:

in my youth, men had to do the compulsory military service (one year of life lost). Woman had not because, you know, they are woman, but they could be professional soldiers, because, you know, there must be parity of rights, and you could find them as your high-rank officer. You in the mud, they in the air-conditioned room pushing buttons on war simulators. No good for war, but good to compete with you in the military job market.

Woman live longer but retire earlier. Until a few years ago it was correct to say that a woman starting to work at 20, retiring at 60, living until 80, had 20 years pension for 40 years of contribution. A man starting at 20, retiring at 65, living until 70, had 5 years of pension with 45 years of contribution. Basically men have always paid woman's pensions. Your next of kin at your office, sitting at the desk opposite you, performing exactly the same office work, will retire earlier than you, because she's a delicate woman and her delicate butt suffers in being sitting too many years. You pay.

You marry. So romantic. If you have children and then divorce, in my country you have 99% probabilities your children to remain with the mother, and she will remain in the house. You will have to give her basically your entire wage besides continuing paying the mortgage. You will have to go on paying her your entire wage even if she lives, in your house, with another man richer than both you and her. Divorced man here spend their nights inside cars. The very lucky ones can maybe afford a bedroom for €500,00. Outrageous but appearing as normal, it seems.

You work in an office where let's say 20% of personnel is a woman (for sociological reasons over which nobody has control). But with "pink quotas" a woman is going now to have 4 times more probability, coeteris paribus, to get a promotion because, you know, it's unfair if less than half persons in top positions are woman (we in Italy are fast arriving there, some other peoples have already this kind of Indian reserve quotas).

You appear not to be divorced, not as of yet.

If and when you are, you'll become aware of the state of exploitation which you, as a divorced man, will be forced to endure. You'll probably forget a bit of all this sugary rhetoric. Believe me society as a whole is unjust toward men. The blame is not to be put on woman, but on the kind of "feminist men" who are "plus réalistes que le roi" and who made all this madness possible.

Regarding trusting your money, I've never heard a man even remotely mentioning the "Maya profecy". If you go to Piazza Navona, where fortune-tellers thrive, you will easily notice that 100% of the clients are woman. I've never met a man in my life who ever asked me my zodiacal sign.

Don't give money to somebody who thinks her future is written in her skin wrinkles.

What is all that fuss about!

Look, in my about 30 years career as a professional photographer, I have worked with/for as manny men as woman. Wether they ware account executives, art directors, designers, editors, writers, journalists, publishers, you name it; both sexes were more or less equally represented (this is North-West Europe).
They all had about the same amount of positive and negative 'points', no real deference at all, some ware really good, others did not fit for the job or just unaware.
The one was neurotic, the other was hysteric, and the rest could more or less be considered as being 'normal', never the less they all had their very personal 'thing' anyway, but who am I...
What I always saw, as a constant, was the suppressing - sometimes insulting - and chauvinistic attitude of men against woman, this was a permanently repeating attitude which annoyed me a lot and never could understand. I never saw woman doing this for the same amount (some of the woman did it too, but merely as a revanche).
There was and is no reason to consider the other of a lesser kind. I always tried to be honestly respectful when appropriate, respect is something one has to earn, not just getting it because of a gender or economical/social 'status'...
I met real and genuine bitches and real and genuine rascals, others ware true lovely persons, men and woman alike.
But, but, the best organized campaigns where directed by woman (and Japanese engineers), no detail was missed and no money got 'lost', what remarkable efficiency!

I am not a feminist militant nor a female chauvinist, just a self employed photographer, entrepreneur, who sees at the end what really happened that day!

"Give to Caesar what Caesar deserves and to God what God deserves" (not a really well translated quote I confess), the same goes for men and woman.

I consider your misogynistic remarks stupid, narrow minded and offensive, as I'm sure many of my fellow members of this forum will, I like admire and respect most women, many of whom I have had lifetime friendships with

Hi Brian I respect fully what you say, maybe you are right and we should talk photography. What I mean with we this and that is in a general sence. It has grown in part through my experinece working with men on building sites whish I used to do in my youth for about ten years.
The way a lot of guys talk is not nice and sometimes a bit anti women. Certainly not all, some of the most noble people I have meet were there. The last ten years I have worked mostly with women, the other side of the coin and I enjoy analising the differences. Sometimes I may exagerate what I mean to make a point.
No intention wanted to put "us" or "we" in a box. No who is better or anything like that, that would be stupid from my part and cheap. The differences of the two mentalities in a very general way is for me fascinating.
I may not be married but have been living with my girlfriend for over 14 years, so as far as I am concerned that is as good as a marriage.
But lets get back to photography thats why we are here.

The original question may as well have been, "Do you live in fear of your wife?"

For what other reason would you hide purchases from your best friend, if not for the worry of whether the next strike of the frying pan is 'really' going to hurt?

Are we not men anymore?

So in answer to the question, YES I do hide my camera purchases from the wife. :D

So, what to do about that Hasselblad?
It's still one of the worlds best camera's (but is doesn't do the laundry...).

Maybe putting a diaper on the Hassy will confuse things enough and no questions will be asked. If questioned, authoritatively announce that it is the baby's twin. Ha ha ha.

... and you got that right... my Hassy hasn't done the laundry, or cooked me lunch, or cleaned up the mess the kids make. Maybe I should have bought a model with more automation.

Well at least this thread is entertaining! :D

I don't hide my stuff, but I don't flaunt it either. I revealed my newest d!git@l P&S after some film work received $175 worth of awards and one also sold from a show -- a little bit of sugar makes the medicine go down, etc., etc. But I have an evil spreadsheet that definitely shows my photographic finances are not net positive! But hey, it's cheaper than ocean sailboat racing!

I have only one anxiety: that when I'm dead, my wife will sell all my stuff for the price I told here I bought it for. Be sure to be at my funeral; you might go home with more then you came ..::D!

Yes, and the last word is always mine: "Yes, Darling..."

Ok, problem solved. I got a Rolleiflex instead. Now I can put it among the other six and my wife will surelly not notice (she is smart but not that smart).

Still not a Hassel owner but at least for some time my GAS is... dammit!! I really want a Hasselblad...

I traded my wife in. I did not get much for her, but the new models are terrific. Younger, lower mileage, lower maintenance, lighter, more enjoyable ... best decision I every made. I never had a problem since for spending money on cameras, lenses ... Life is good and I am happy.
