The fact that she threw away shoes that she bought and never wore is just a huge show of insanity, or nervous breakdown, or whatever, doubling the damage (unless she recovered them a moment later after the sad show) and would have deserved an infinite ban on shoe purchase, while your commendable habit of using the cameras you buy is just a testament of your sincere passion for photography, deserving the future discretionary useless unappreciated unused shoes family budget to be entirely diverted to useful actually-used sensible beautiful film technology.

But did she really did that? It's so nonsensical it's hard to believe. And to demonstrate what? If anything it demonstrates even more fully that she is the money waster.

I agree, I hope you at least went and took out the unused ones...

If you didn't SAVE them, you should at least have donated them to those in need rather than let them go to the trash...

I tried this - I pointed out to my moaning and complaining wife that she had as many pairs of shoes as I had cameras.

BIG MISTAKE. I am embarrassed that, as a married man of many years, I was so foolish.

My wife likes shoes. And clothes. And handbags. Shortly after I made the 'shoes' comment... I noticed the cupboard was bare. She had thrown nearly all of her shoes in the recycling bin. Everything except her works shoes and one or two pairs for best. Everything else.... dozens of pairs of boots at £80 and more a time, shoes that had never been worn. The whole lot - in the trash. For months it was 'I can't go to xxxxx - I haven't got any shoes to wear".

You see... I like OWNING cameras. Whereas my wife... she likes BUYING shoes. It's the shopping.... And I gave her the perfect excuse to dump the lot and start all over again.

Let this be a warning. Don't try to outsmart your wife. Don't make my mistake... just put up with the constant moaning. It is the way it is suppossed to be...

Time for an attitude adjustment. Tell her that since she won't let you buy cameras but she can waste money by throwing shoes out, you are not going to renew your marriage contract at you next anniversary. Then stand back and enjoy the show!

I'm guilty. Mostly in the past. I haven't bought anything recently. They would be kept hidden for sometimes close to a year and I would sneak them out to use them then return them to their safe hiding location. After enough time had elapsed, I would gain a little more confidence and a camera would make a brief cameo appearance, then a little more frequent and longer appearances. If and when she said something, I usually replied with something like "So and so gave it to me" or "he gave me the parts from various cameras and I was able to assemble one from it". There was a slight bit of truth in each answer.

I hope she never reads this.

Our marriage isn't real good, but it has lasted more than 20 years so far.

Alas, you are seeing this from a male perspective. Owning lots of stuff is just an impediment to further SHOPPING - which is, of course, the meaning of life. Chucking the shoes was not a sad show - it was a joyous moment, apparently, what with all that empty wardrobe space just waiting to be filled.... She really did do this, but I have over egged the pudding slightly by ommiting the fact that some of the shoes were many weeks and a few several months old, so were in danger of becoming.... NO LONGER FASHIONABLE. So, maybe they had to go. The underlying metaphor being that none of my cameras are less than 20 years old and most are much older, so, they are definately not trendy.

As for donating the shoes to the poor - well, I am not sure if they got recycled or not, but we live in Britain which has a welfare state. This means that not even the poor are compelled to wear unfashionable footware...

My wife was in the car and heard it, but I didn't say it to her. I made the shoes comparison when a friend of hers asked me why I needed so many cars. It's just exchanging one rhetorical question for another.

Usually the player's strike starts with great fanfare and bravado...

But when the management lockout starts to really take hold, the tune usually starts to change pretty quickly.

The secret is to acquire more cameras than she is willing to count. Then a new face usually goes unnoticed... After a "conditioning period", it just becomes... "You got another box today..."

PS: I never ever mention her spending. I'm not about to get into that discussion.

I was concerned that my earlier comment must have come across as ba bit 'men are from mars women are from venus' stereotyped.... In reality it is merely a symptom of people living together with competeing priorities.

At least you are both collectors - that must be the route to all happiness

If dishonesty is the only route to go, just say you have been saving bit by bit for months for such a purchase. In reality, you could just do this now and have a kit in six months... It's not like they don't come up for sale all the time. But with a baby on the way, and if the purchase is really to save those precious moments, and if your current cameras don't cut it, go for it and make up for it later. Cut $10/week from your personal spending---most of us probably spend more than that on coffee and/or beer.


I put about $20/week aside for photography. At the rate I shoot with everything else going on in my life, about half of this goes to film or chemicals and the rest towards savings for gear or whatever. $500 or so a year isn't that much, but it does go a long way, especially once you have a kit set up already.

I have been into cars and drag racing for quite a few years, i've recently just sold a race engine and a couple of very large turbos, I have then got into photography, started with a box brownie...have just bought a 5x4 speed graphic lol anyway this is how you need to put it:

"Which would you rather me being interested in cars with loads of expensive oily car parts cluttering up the place since we have no garage, or a nice neat high quality camera that will only go up in value that will sit on the shelf out the way?"

At this point you then ask if she wants a tea or coffee and go put the kettle on I'm quite lucky in the fact that I have asked the wife to be if i'm allowed a dark room in our house we are looking to buy next year and i've been allowed lol

My wife is really smart and she knows all my cameras. Now I want to buy my first Hasselblad which in no way looks like to anything I already have to tell her its the same. We live in a small apartment with no place to hide things and my baby is coming soon. She will be furious if I come home with a new camera... Any idea? Divorce is not an option.

There might be a few (good-)reasons why your wife would not accept you buying an other camera.
She might have other, more important, priorities or items to spend money on:
- a baby coming its way, something that costs hands full of money, she thinks you might have 'forgotten' that
- a new or safer car to take the kids to school
- a new washing machine, clean underwear and ditto baby clothes are important too!
- redecorating, a cosy house is nice for the whole family (and feeding the baby)
- the heating boiler is aging
- she thinks that you should invest in something really useful, what ever that might be (for the baby)
- the threat of the economical crisis is coming in closer and closer
- the mortgage (rent) that is becoming more and more difficult to pay (see above)
- her job is insecure (and she didn't dear to tell you) (see above)
- keep something for bad times to come (see above)
- she finally might want something nice, and less down to earth, for her self too (becoming a mother is ruining your body shape...)
- she doesn't like the kind of pictures you take, you might change you style first...
- she want you to be more kind and attend full to her
- she thinks that you love more these camera's than you love her...
- she thinks that you already have enough spend on those damned camera's: "...now, do something good, get out and shoot!!!..."

Be happy with the new baby and forget that Hasselblad (and see that quote below)!

Women are wiser than we think and usually they are correct in what they say. We (men) tend to forget that or even think otherwise. Even when they go mad they do forgive and understand. If she says there are too many cameras she will have a good point and is proberly correct.
Women may have too many shoes but it is part of there identity. Cameras etc. may be part of the identity of men, but women also wear shoes for men, to look good. Men don't have cameras for their wives, we may brag with them but I would say it is more souly for us.
I believe Philippe-Georges above has a few good points. She may reconize a problem clearer and better than a man. I would rather give my money to women than a man.

IMO Woman want to look good for the benefit of their own vanity and especially insecurity, not "for men". They certainly don't wear high heels out of generosity toward men (who normally don't care a fig about heels, and care about other stuff, for which many woman are not just as generous :w00t.

I think it was Schiller who said something like: "Men desire woman; woman desire men's desire".

You seem to have some kind of a feminist bias. Don't worry. Certainly some black slaves were pro-slavery, after all
