it's a mercury one...is a fix possible or will it no longer end accurately?

When you say divided, you have two bits on top of each other? This happened a few times to me. I stuck the thermometre in really hot water, forcing the mercury up to the top. Then let it settle back down. Always seemed to work.

..thanks, I think I'll try heating it in hot water as you suggest. I also have a 'type 3 process control' - which I read should last '1 to 2 lifetimes' and since i already have rather less than one lifetime left, maybe it's time I started to use it.

I would first shake it down, then heat and finally cool. Repeating the last two if necessary.
