Gregorian chants when contact printing 8x10s. For working on stuff shot with the Speed Graphic I prefer AM radio---jazz especially if its broadcast from another time zone.

Robin Trower! Wow I haven't heard him in years! Or ELP or ELO for that manner. Echo and the Bunnymen anyone? Lately I've been listening to early Stones and Beatles.
Now where'd that old turntable get to...

OK, I don't have a darkroom, but when I'm on here with my APUG friends I love listening to Carla Bruni (Quelqu'un M'a Dit), Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, Pete Murray, Jack Johnson, etc... and pretty much anything with classical guitar or piano...
and sipping a glass of red. Hi everyone!

2004! Time is flying too quick these days. I'm cranking up my photography a notch or two this year. I have my darkroom, with Bose, moonlight and Merlot - it doesn't get much better than that. A studio will be added in the next few months. The current cranking albums are "Bad Company - 10 from 6" and "Bryan Adams - 18 till I die".

OK Here goes. I listen to Bluegrass on my CD player. The preferred groups are Blue Highway,The Del McCoury Band, Rickie Skaggs, Bill Monroe. I love the acooustical instruments and the upbeat music. I even sing along on some of my favorite tunes.

The music makes the time go easier. So many darkroom chores involve simply waiting.

My music source is an ancient (late 60's) tabletop AM/FM radio that belonged to my grandfather. It sits on the shelf above the sink. It's got a big, warm, fat sound...you'd think it was a tube amp. The tuner is a little touchy, so I leave it set on one station...WNYC New York. WNYC has an eclectic mix. As I print on weekends, sometimes for many hours on both Saturday and Sunday, I hear a wide range of programming but most enjoy Click and Clack and Jonathon Schwartz playing what he calls 'good music'. Jonathon's got odd taste in music, and I don't love all of it, but you hear some interesting stuff. I also put on my iPod and lately have been enjoying Frank Sinatra's Live in Vegas Boxset, Leonard Cohen, Beck, and Extraordinary Machine by Fiona Apple.

Is that the Karine Polwart who played with the Battlefield Band for a year or so? I love her voice. What's she doing these days?

I listen to a lot of public radio on the weekends. If I'm printing late at night it's a.m. radio and "Coast to Coast!"

MUSIC

As long as this thread has been revived I'll chime in - I have a mix of early 70's technology in the form of an old Panasonic all in one AM/FM stereo amp and turntable from my college days - I have have a 5 disc cd changer hooked up to one input, and my Ipod (which I mostly use now) hooked up into the other input - with 30gb at my disposal I have my whole music collection at my fingertips - mostly 60's and 70's r&r - plus a healthy bit of Elvis, Buddy Holly and other early r&r.

When I built my darkroom, I put an extra set of Altec Lansing computer speakers (lfront speakers, rear surround pair and sub). I then ran an 1/8" stereo micro cable through the wall, under the carpet, back to the computer in the other room. The female end of that cable is wall-mounted behind the main counter in my darkroom. I can plug the cable for the speakers either into that...or into my iPod. My iPod has about 15,000 songs on it and my tastes are similarly eclectic to Black Dogs...Sinatra, Bill Monroe, Ramones, Coltrane... The computer has the Internets. I favor KPIG, NPR and a variety of Live365 stations ranging from Surf and Exotica to classic Country.

Nice, especially the Coltrane and Bill Monroe. Lately I've been listening to James Blood Ulmer (odyssey) and lots of Charles Mingus. Hey, has anyone heard the new Ornette Coleman or Sonny Rollins?

I really like serbian music (all of it) while working.
It helps pass the time during those 6min exposures.

That's the one-she released a new album, Scribbled In Chalk last year which is well worth a listen. You might also want to check out Ballad Of The Broken Seas by Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan.Johnny Cash gets a lot of spins in my darkroom as well.

Howard,

Just passing along that fact that one of the counties that I cover in my job (forester) is Ohio County, KY----the home of Bill Monroe is Rosine, KY in Ohio County. I have seen his birthplace before and after the renovation. I think it may be a nice place to photograph now that I thnk about it. Just thought you might find that interesting.

Thanks, Chuck. That is a GOOD idea. I'll wait until the weather warms up a bit. If I am lucky I can find a good Bluegrass festival to boot.

Due to the cold weather, havent been doing much more than film developing recently. But generally I find my self listening to Wagner's Tannhauser or part of The Ring cycle when I print.

Wow, someone else in the world likes Mark Lanegan. That makes two of us, although I can only listen to him when I'm in a pretty dark mood. Thats not a darkROOM mood though, I prefer much lighter fare in the darkroom.

I have a ritual when firing up the darkroom. I mix up the developer, prepare the darkroom (block out light, load negative in the carrier and install the safelight). I go over to my home office, and download BBC Radio 6's Craig Charles Funk and Soul or Mary Fox's Northern Soul and Motown programmes. Then I am off into the dark.

PS does anyone know if Booker T and the MG's live album Back to Back ever got released on CD?

I bought an XM radio for my truck last christmas and I have a small receiver and speakers in the dark. The XM radio plugs into the AUX channel. 150 channels are available. Like some I listen to channel 14 Bluegrass Junction mostly. 24/7 bluegrass.

I prefer jazz in the darkroom. Mainly MJQ, Desmond, Miles and 'Trane, Bill Evans, Ella, Dinah Washington, etc., etc.

Gene

Hmmm - Dinah Washington and Gene's bromoils - I sense some synchronicity here:wink: .
