Which one?
320 or 200?

also, lolz, this is a funny joke , i see what you did there.
Best i can see, there is only one speed on the box, hence "box speed", but no doubt this needs some obfuscation, allegations of indecency, secret hidden agendas and Lacanian "deep structure meaning" reading of the words (https://nosubject.com/Structure or https://nosubject.com/Point_de_capiton), perhaps using the so called "letter skipping method" of obtaining the hidden secret "bible code" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bible_code#Equidistant_Letter_Sequence_method).

Anecdotally, this "letter skipping method" was a big deal when i was young (perhaps dating myself), with many computer software CD options available on the market. They all faded away when it was shown that literally anything can be extracted from any text with this method, depending on the desired outcome, not only the bible it self, including some truly shocking predictions and "hidden messages" in the actual bible, for example, a prediction of John Lenon's murder. Does this mean the bible does not have some hidden meaning us mere mortals have not found yet? who's to say, certainly not Lacan.

Ideally, the term "box speed" has only one meaning, but in case this is in fact an ambiguous term to some, i just googled this and found this incredible article, clearly written for the lay user, still, every Photrio user should consider reading it:

Maybe I've missed it in the 28 pages. How'd you like the film? Is it overly contrasty? large grain/small? what's the tonal quality? true film speed? is it an improvement over what you're using now? Is the film developer combination something you like? Will the film add something different and unique to your photography? Maybe all these questions have been answered and I've missed it. Apologies if so.

Disclaimer - I am a film slut and like all film.

Now with that out of the way.. I shot it at ISO 200, and found the grain to be fine, as in small. The developer I am using is Cinestill DF96 Monobath - which I use with all the films I shoot that can handle it. There are a couple that do not - Silberra Orta where the emulsion literally strips off, and Adox CMS 20.

With DF96, Catlabs is nice and punchy, with deep blacks and bright highlights. I did not use any filters. Will it add something different and unique? No. But only the extreme films I use do, like the super slow ones, or the ones w/o or very weak anti-halation layers (Arista 100 for example) or ortho films. With the rest, it's on me to create something unique
This film is a very decent value though at $6.99/36 exp. That makes it cheaper than HP5, and a lot cheaper than TriX. More expensive than Kentmere 400 which I really like, but Kentmere is definitely chunkier, and also harder to get from my local stores. I mail order it, while my locals always have these 'alternative' brands on the shelves.

For all those getting in a tizzy over Catlabs 320 PRO, it's just a roll of film that costs $6.99 fercryinoutloud. Some here act like they got bound, gagged and beaten. Then again, maybe they're into that sort of thing. Look, I don't judge.

My point? Just try it. If you find it blows, big whup, $6.99 for a life lesson. But I like it.

Yes, this thread is most entertaining.

Some here act like they got bound, gagged and beaten. Then again, maybe they're into that sort of thing. Look, I don't judge.

But now as we got the chance to worry, bicker or just banter about it, instead about the things around us today really worrying, we shall not let pass this chance....
Thus see it positive.

To get back to the very film:
More expensive than Kentmere 400 which I really like, but Kentmere is definitely chunkier.

What do you mean by chunky? Grain size or form?

320-interesting choice for a film speed. In recent years only Foma has produced a 320 film but I think it has ceased production of this

That was in fact their old T800 emulsion as far as I know

You may recognize the acronym: Q.E.D.

where i grew up, the term is more often written as an acronym, the letters of which make the word best translated as "allegory", this thread is a nice allegory to the real world. As it is, more commentators here actually did buy our all new film and are happy for it, despite a loud minority still harping on about how other companies (who couldent care less about them or this forum) treat them better and as a result we dont measure up to those standards and thus are not worthy.

It's also nice to see you agree with me that the 4-5 people on this thread (perhaps you are one of them) who are intent on misreading and over analyzing every word are those who also declare flat our they will not buy this film or do business with us because of our refusal to comply with their ever changing and never ending demands for "data" that will not change our film or the outcome of using it. Somehow this group finds conspiratory talking points as they prefer to follow the "data" provided from a sample of one, by a single tester (with dubious testing methodology) that is contrary to all other real world examples presented to them.
It is indeed a good example of the self importance applied by the "many on this thread" you describe, which i am pretty sure were not and never would have been our customers in the first place regardless of the information we do or do not provide.

If a new film which is less expensive than most, offers excellent value in the form of its characteristics and our simple, unequivocal word is not enough, i doubt anything would be

As a non native speaker of English I don‘t get it how q.e.d. includes letters for allegory, so maybe someone can enlighten me.

Regarding the content of this thread, I would have been happy with an information about ISO, but the samples are just fine for me. The film is on the contrasty side, so not something I would normally use, but if I lived in the US, I would definitely check it out, however, for Europeans the price is not really competitive, but now that there are samples available, that s fine, because everyone can decide for her/himself whether the price is worth it or not.
In general, the tone of this thread, however, is quite hostile and condescending. But we are on the internet, so… what to expect?

PMSL....good one

Film slut....I like that. I guess I am a camera slut. And a slut in general.

That was in fact their old T800 emulsion as far as I know

Was this ever proven or any evidence given....other than someone here making a guess and an allegation that Foma had found a freezer full of Fomapan T800?

No need to put the word data in quotes up there: it's data. The poster of that data has been open with details and polite, and welcomed comment on their methodology on more than one occasion, so have at it if you feel there is an issue with it, or post your own data if you like.

I don't think the preliminary results are "contrary to all other real world examples". Images from your film look like it is being pushed when exposed at iso200 to me, often with inky blacks and blown highlights in the same image. The data so far indicates that might be the case.

There may be an opportunity here to expose and develop this film at iso200 for that punchy look, or expose and develop at iso50 to capture more information and make contrast decisions later. A little data will help community members figure that out, so I'm glad the other thread exists.

I have been reading this thread since it began, why I really don't know🐱. I got some of this mysterious film 10 days ago but have yet to use any of it🦁. Don't know if I should shoot it in my Yashica 1/2 frame or try medium format- maybe 6x9?📸 Actually I like the cat on the boxes. Think I'll grab a box of 35mm and a box of 120mm, load 2 cameras, and enjoy.

There are a lot of black and white films on the market. Which one to buy? Oooooo, let's get the one with the cat on the box. Cool. And it's cheap. Sort of. There are others that are cheaper. Oh. But they don't have a cat on the box. Oooooo.

Its been shown that this film has a true speed of something closer to 50 ASA, and that to get anything close to 320 ASA, you're actually pushing the film in development, a LOT. This gives blank, detail-less shadows and blocked highlights. I have seen evidence of this in example photos, including those posted by CatLabs.
But I supose that if what you like is the 1960's "editorial" Tri-X look, then this might be the cat's meow for you, pun intended.
I used the X 80 sheet film from CatLabs a couple years ago, and its true speed was closer to 25ASA than 80 ASA. Even at 25 ASA it was a struggle to record sufficient shadow information to be printable. New films brought to the market are a great thing, but its not doing anyone any favors if the manufacturer isn't being honest about the performance traits of the product.

Its noteworthy that Catlabs continues to decline all requests for characteristic curves and actual film speed data, preferring to make jokes and excuses for the absence of factual data.

Indeed, this is a prime example of the difference between the real world and whatever it is that happens on this forum

Well you have some supporters here but also those questioning a lack of information and not getting it without quite a struggle e.g. for the first time I can recall, you have stated that 320 is the film's true speed as it is stated on the box

I'd have thought that this is not the best way to win over those with concerns Of course it may be that you have written off those who have not expressed 100% support as well as being able to now change any minds

Fair enough but in that case I do now wonder why you now consider the time you spend her as a participant on this thread is worth the effort in terms of future sales of Pro 320
