Um, I'm afraid I'm going to dare as well.

"Unacceptable" is probably a bit too strong a term for my feelings on the matter, but hybrid work doesn't really float my boat and (IMO) it's not really in keeping with an APUG Gathering. Speaking for myself I'd prefer to keep it traditional.

(Note - not necessarily B&W).

ah was drowning, till ah found me a laht

But surely a lost sheep is always welcome, brothers? Note to self-hide the DSLR in a safe place:munch: :munch:

Presumably the "laht" in question was also some form of buoyancy aid? Otherwise you would just have had a better look at that in which you were drowning... which, on balance, might not have been a good thing!

:D

Frank-it's 'light' with a southern US accent ...

I'd worked that one out. It was the "Ah was lost in the dark till ah found me a laaf-jacket" part that made me giggle!

Unaceptable...

I can see that 'the spirit of APUG' is pure analog and thoroughly agree with said comments. Not all of us have the luxury of permanent darkrooms as yet... Although 'one' is currently working on it...

Don't the rules state that a scan of a negative or print - in the gallery is acceptable though?

So, if that is the case - is a straight (digital) print of that neg scan also acceptable? Without any manipulation of course...

Mark

My understanding is that unmanipulated scans (digital in their very nature) are accepted in the gallery because this is an internet forum (digital in its very nature). In a Print Exchange scenario (and, in my view, a Gathering) this does not apply.

If I entered an APUG print exchange and received an inkjet print I wouldn't be best pleased. Whilst Gatherings are much more relaxed affairs I (personally) don't feel hybrid or digital work is really in the spirit of the event.

Don't get me wrong. My opinion is just that - one member's opinion. I have no delusions of being Judge "I am the law!" Dredd!

(I sometimes think I'm a small radish, but that's another story!)

I'd be interested in hearing other people's views and am more than happy to go along with the majority.

Small radish and majority...

Am only whingeing 'cos the 504 is not yet in full production... small matter of not enough room 'at top'.

The intended darkroom area just got put on the market, so it looks like I might have to find a mobile one for a while.

Mark

Not that it makes an iota of difference, but I am totally committed to fim capture/digital output, and if showing work produced in this way would be unacceptable in a given situation, I would simply opt not to attend the event in question.

Regards,

David

we've gone and upset david now. for what it's worth, I'm not particularly worried about what prints people bring - I can see that as we are an analogue forum, we should be bringing analogue prints, but then again, if someone isnt able to use a drakroom but is still commmitted to analogue phiotography, that's fine too. How about coming along and not bringing any prints David? you can still join in the discussion.

It's really not a problem, Leon, I'm sure you'll manage fine without me!

Best regards,

David

As has been pointed out repeatedly, there is no requirement or expectation for anyone to bring prints. It's nice if you can (we can all do with a good laugh from time to time  ) but not expected, whether that is because someone does not feel up to it or because the production method is off-topic for an APUG inspired meeting.

Cheers, Bob.

I agree. The showing / viewing of prints is a part of the Gathering but not its entirety and there is absolutely no requirement or obligation to contribute.

At one of these do's sometime I'd like to see if we can sort out somewhere to project slides. This would open up the shows up to another area of film-workers (lightbox and loupe isn't really the best method of collectively viewing transparencies).

When I didn't have access to a darkroom I used Agfa Scala, usually 5x4 , which was great (also handy for showing work to mags, galleries etc)-must try some more b&w slides some time.

Very well put Bob.

APUG is, for me, an oasis in a desert of digital mediocrity; which is another way of saying what is printed on the front page.
APUG’s strength is that it is completely non-digital, except for the communication medium without which we cannot operate.
I attend these events to meet, and discuss with like minded individuals the trials, tribulations, and delights of all aspects of traditional photography and printing; I have no wish to see or discuss water spraying, for I can do that at any one of numerous venues, without travelling hundreds of miles to do so. I would prefer that we maintain the APUG philosophy at these gatherings.

Bob - Is it that time of year already?!

Dave - If you post an animated GIF of tumbleweeds I'll withhold your cheesecake ration!

Leon - Will Canterbury still be there in October or will it have sunk like Manchester is currently doing?!

Everyone else - Mr Miller is unnerved by the quiet. How about a few party games to keep him amused? Pass the Polaroid? Pin the cable release on the RB67?

Any other suggestions?!

i take your point Dave.
