Can you recognise this negative carrier?

Hi Guys, This glassless negative carrier has outside dimensions 99.8 x 57mm, inside 23.5 x 35.5mm. 2 pins on one side and 3 on other. Just one piece. Nicely made. Is it Focomat negative carrier? Or?? Thank you in advance!

Looks just like the one that came with my Valloy II; I;m pretty sure the Focomat is the same. I can't check because I gave away the Valloy last year.

Looks higher end, definitely not Beseler etc. It's smaller than it looks. You may be right Leitz?

Looks similar to a Focomat negative carrier, but it’s missing the silver “ramps” (by the thumbs — not mine!) that the film bumps up against, and it lacks the red slots that show the frame numbers. I’d guess a carrier either made by a talented metal worker or a carrier made to fit an enlarger that mimics the Focomat design. (Or maybe the Focomat mimics another manufacturer’s design...)

I am quite sure this was made for the Focomat Ic and the Valoy II. Perhaps by Kienzle who have made different sized negative carriers for these enlargers. Some to include the negative borders. And perhaps they made this one to exclude the negative borders.

The size you give is precisely that of a Leitz made negative holder

It can also be a special order made by Leitz. That was not unusual. For instance I have a baseboard for the Reprovit II that was prepared for the Focomat Ic (the holes for the column and the wiring). This baseboard is quite large and has landscape proportions, which made sense to who it was made for.

Yes, "silver ramps" are not there but it can be still used.

Hilo is correct, this is a Focomat Ic / Valoy 2 negative carrier that is meant to be used with two glass plates hinged together by a piece of tape and sandwiching the neg to form a dual-glassed negative carrier. Hence missing the silver guide rails, they would hinder sliding in the glass-neg-sandwich. As far as I can tell this is an original Leitz part. That is, i've never seen a thrid party made of this type, so the statement might be considered conjecture. The holder and glass plates are shown in some of the Ic manuals floating around on the web and possibly in the '68 catalogue posted here a while ago. You'll probably find this using the search function.

I believe those where standard issue with the very late grey Ics. I've seen 3 or 4 of those 80s grey ones which came with this carrier. Those late ones also seem to have a silver (not hammertone laquered) knob to fasten the parallelogram on the column. But that's another topic.

I've been using this holder without glass sheets and I prefer it to the older (hammered and laquered) ones as the surface is totally smooth and I've more freedom positioning the filmstrip. It is much lighter than the older ones, something I'm not too fond of. At any rate it works fine with a Ic and Valoy II.

Yep, its too well made. And it looks too good for being used. The third party parts by the mentioned maker are usually only painted until first use
