Actually, my engineering background (digital as well as analog expertise) gives me a solid foundation to base my findings on.

Quantization does not in itself make for a less direct capture. Whatever “direct” actually means and entails in this context (clearly a virtue in your view).
What is the definition of photography and what is the exact difference between photography and the definition of graphic arts?

I too think “digital” in its current form with the whole honed and locked in suite of technology and material science, is fundamentally and irretrievably inferior to film as an image sensor.

That doesn’t mean that something equally good or better couldn’t happen in the future.
It is unlikely though in the foreseeable future, as a new normal has been created and the world seems at ease with incremental pseudo advances introduced every year.

Your choice of words and tropes just didn’t strike me at all as particularly scientific or something an engineer would say.
That contrasted hugely with your last sentence.

It was mathematically proven not long ago that nothing can ever beat an analog computer for speed and theoretical precision.
And indeed something that can only be described as analog computers are indeed used in a number of unseen and inconspicuous places where speed and low latency is of the outmost importance.
Take that as a bendy analogy to film.

Germany sounds especially attractive politically these days.

There seems no reason, other than the obvious personal habits, to argue about digital Vs "analog" photography.

Most of the work we seem to admire here on Photrio is digital photography of still film work.

Obviously all of the photography we admire online is digital. That's the nature of this beast.

As well, virtually all commercial photography, everywhere, is shot digitally.

Camera markets aren't "photography". They're like all other merchandise markets/

That phones are literally all digital cameras, and that all traditional photographic subjects are photographed with digital devices is unarguable.

Perhaps Americans would be interested in photo studies in Germany.

+ 1.000.
I have lived in several countries, including Germany. What Mr. Serger has explained here is absolutely correct.
And the "jtk" posts is trolling and nonsense. Has nothing to do with reality.
Trolls are destroying forums, killing any quality discussion. Moderators should protect the forum.

Back to original topic: Good survey in general, I have fulfilled it. Some topics and questions are missing, though.
I am curious to see the results.

Yes, from time to time there’s one here. They want to feel they worth something, so they try to get all attention they can get. And this is what keep trolls trolling away.

I’m growing sick and tired of it, so I’m reporting troll behavior from now on. I encourage everyone to do the same.

Achtung! Futtern die Trolls nicht!
¡Atenção! ¡Nao alimente os trolls!
¡Atención! ¡No alimente a los trolls!
Attention! Don't feed the trolls!

Careful not to fall into reverse trolling now!

Sometimes one mans troll is another mans truth teller.

I’d say JTK isn’t as much a troll as attention hungry.
There is a subtle difference.

Yea, I agree. The thing is... I like it here. When everything goes well, Photrio is a great place, as APUG used to be.

So, when one needs to bring these subjects to everyone’s attention, it’s kinda bad. I mean, it was already bad because of the trolling, then it gets worse because of the complaining. And it messes with the thread, takes it off-subject.

So, from now on, I’ll keep my mouth shut. I have said enough.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

There is a subtle difference.

In that case a difference without distinction.

A troll is out to enrage and fan the fire at almost any cost.

On the other hand there are “sea lions” (look up sealioning) that are seemingly polite but very insistent in discussions and responses to their exact (often inane and obvious) queries and griefs.
And they have a looooot of time.

JTK is perhaps somewhere in between.
He wants some response, but is not crazy in his insistence and doesn’t want to see blood in particular.

Sea lions are quieter and more pleasing to the ear.

Concerning the second part of your sentence:
It demonstrates both your low level of knowledge about well reputed / famous photographers and Germany. Indicates that you have never looked at the work of famous / well known German photographers like Gursky, von Unwerth, Lindbergh, Lebeck, Lagerfeld, Niedringhaus, Rosing, Klemm, Koelbl, Rakete, Becher, Struth, Teller, Ruff, Newton, Tesch, Nicht, Schulz, Zalenga, Ripke, Münch, Ernst, Kakareko, Obenhoff, Peschak, Becker, Bartels, Gundlach, Höfer, Horst, Sander, Tillmans, Steinert, Freund, Häusser. Just to name a few in no order. There are hundreds more.

Regards,
Henning

I'm glad you put that in. I was stunned by the bizarre assertion concerning German photographic history. Just starting with Blossfeldt, Sander and Renger-Patzsch, you have three giants of photography in the early part of last century. Moving on to Bernd and Hilla Becher and the Dusseldorf school you have the giants of contemporary photography. For the bonus round, in what country did Stieglitz start his career in photography? I'll give a hint, it was in a city called "Berlin."
