Friend of mine sent me a Bronica ETR that I am trying to figure out. When I first noticed it I could see the shutter blades sticking halfway open in the lens. I fired it a couple of times and now I don't see shutter blades at all. I've tried with the back off, with the back on, etc and every time when I fire the camera, the mirror goes up and the lens stays open.

Any ideas on why the shutter isn't opening or closing? Also, it does not have a battery in it right now, but I'd expect the shutter to close on its 1/500th mechanical speed...

The shutter not functioning in the ETR could be due either to...
  1. a film magazine not telling the body that the film has been advanced
  2. the film magazine's film-advanced interlock pin intrudes too far into body, preventing the mirror from rising fully -- which prevents the lens shutter from firing
  3. the shutter in the lens has old lubrication causing it to stick rather than close/open properly

Yes, I experienced #2 when I purchased a used film back to use with a relatively new ETRSi...Bronica had to adjust the film magazine!

Have you try using the multiple exposure button and see whether the shutter
works. Because you can take off the magazine and trigger the camera .

I'll look, I'm not sure I've tried firing it with the lens.

On the bottom of the lens is a T setting and an A setting. When I fire the camera on A the shutter opens and stays open through subsequent cockings and firings of the camera. When I fire the camera on T the shutter closes and stays closed through subsequent firings of the camera (two days ago the shutter appeared to be opening and closing everytime it was shot on the T setting. Yesterday and today it is acting as previously described).
