I am about ready to plunk down some serious money for a new D800 & 14-24 2.8 lens at my local camera store. I had a couple of questions about this brand new Nikon..

1) Are brand new Nikon cameras sealed in plastic bags? The salesperson showed me a brand new model but the plastic bag it came in was already open. (She also said she had to open the lens to see what size filter thread the 14-24 took....Not sure if an open boxed lens from the local camera store is that important or not..?)
2) How many shutter actuations are acceptable for a brand new camera purchase from a local camera store?

I guess I am bit worried since this a fairly large monetary purchase. Any and all input would be greatly appreciated!

If the bag is open then someone has surely had the camera out to take a look. Perhaps they were curious, or perhaps they wanted to try it out. Of course if they are showing the camera for sale it is likely that some other prospective purchaser probably opened the bag before you were shown the same camera.

From a warranty perspective you should still be covered as long as the serial numbers all match.

I imagine they opened the lens to let a customer look at it. I would ask if it was a previously bought and returned lens. The camera could also have been tried in the store. I wouldn't worry about it if there are less than 50 to a 100 actuations and the camera is working perfectly. I also wouldn't worry about the lens if it's pristine and the image quality is good.

I can't remember if my D800E was in a sealed bag of not. It was certainly in a bag (I'm pretty sure I was the first one to open the box).

Today I went in and made my purchase for the D800 and the 14-24 lens. I asked the salesperson if they had software available to check the shutter actuations. He said no - so, I asked him if he objected to me bringing my laptop into the store to check the actuations. He did not object. In fact, he was not fazed a bit with my request. My fears were put to rest when I saw that the shutter had fired 1 time (the test shot I took  Long story long...it ended up being a positive buying experience. Some people may find my antics a bit much. However, for paying so much for a camera - I wanted to make sure I felt good about the purchase.
Thank you for all of your comments and giving me peace of mind!
