My first camera was a no name (Pentax k1000 clone) with a broken light meter and a 50mm lens. This was back in ‘87 or ‘88. I’ve experimented with many formats and focal lengths over the years but have always returned to 35mm format. My experience with “street photography” isn’t about stealth. It’s about capturing great moments in time, in uncontrolled environments. Technique and bank account will dictate your gear choices. My personal gear is a 35mm camera, 35mm lens and a good pair of shoes. I set my focus to 5ft (1.5m) and I use my feet to get that distance between me and my subject. (10ft on the rare occasions that I’m shooting with a 50mm lens, 2ft with 21mm).
