Hi!

I've tested the Bergger Pancro 400 with the Pentax 6x7.
As I want to use this film mainly for portraits I did the test shooting portraits. Violeta helped me again ;-)
I love this film. It really seems easy for the enlarger. I hope to check it very soon.
The negative is really beautiful. No grain at all or really negligible. Flat and nearly free of dust once dried.
It reminds me of the Trix400 I've developed with Perceptol or Xtol.

Nice!

I have some rolls in 135 which i have been shooting with 3 stop bracketing. Going to develop in RO9 and D76 to find which one i like the most. Tour XTol results are lovely, need to try that as well!

I think your test frames are excellent, they agree with what I have found with the 4x5" Bergger film I have used. I find that Bergger 400 is very much like the late Fuji Neopan 400, excellent tonal rendition of subjects with a nice contrast kick that seems to be slightly different to any other film I have used.

I think you will be very pleased with prints and they should print easily, at least of what you have here. The Tri-X you have shown is also shot under similar conditions, as far as grain and other things, I think both films are quite close. Bergger in my opinion does seem to have an edge in that when one prints it, there is a terrific contrasty look, but with detail held in both shadow and highlight especially with images shot under nice portrait lighting as you have done here.

When my stock of Neopan 400 runs out, I will be switching to Bergger 400 for my 135 work.

Mick.

I think you take truly sensitive and charming portraits whatever the film!

^ probably not very helpful.

The Berger shots (to my eye) seem to have a wider gamut of tone (dynamic range? I don't know what is the preferred term for analogue photography) - very nice.

Great results, Antonio !
Your model is beautiful (as usual) - I like the wide range of midtones here.
I have 5 exposed rolls of Pancro 400 (2 of them exposed @Iso 1200) - I will try them with Xtol and Rodinal.
Thank you for sharing !

What do you think?

Excuse me Antonio

In my opinion (of someone who is more visually pleasing with a more pronounced contrast) and bearing in mind that there are many factors in the middle, I find a slight lack of overall contrast that helps those midtones. I wouldn't say TriX anyway.

Sorry for the silly question: What's the colour of the rabbit in that T-shirt? White?

Looking at that Xtol info. (mix/time) I guess you used it at box speed. Did you use the recommended sulphite bath after fixing?

Congratulations, and thanks for posting!

Warm regards!

Wow these are beautiful, i really like the midtones. Its soft and gradual where as Tri-x i find is not so subtle. I need to go into my wallet i guess

Edit: A PDF with useful information from Bergger about the film.

Hi!
Second thoughts ... I think you are right: Trix is not so subtle.
I think you won't regret it!

Cheers!

Hi!
Thank you ;-)
I've never used Neopan 400 but what I also think that Bergger gives nice contrast ... althought I lately prefer a more contrasty result!
I'll try some 4x5 sheets next weekend !

Cheers!

Well .. it't very helpful for me
As Mac said later, it has a wide range of midtones!

Cheers!

Hi, Lag!!
I agree with you about the lack of "overall contrast" ... But it reminds me of the Trix, a subtly less contrasty Trix. Hahaha, I need to shot more Trix, I guess ;-)
The rabbit ... ummm, I don't remember right know :-( Pinky?
Yes: Box speed ... no, dammit! ... no sulphite bath after fixing
Kind regards!

Hi!

Regarding to the "recommended sulphite bath after fixing" ... I think that I'll try "Tetenal Lavaquick" Any other ?

Cheers!

Hmm! I posted a comment here on how I liked these shots and since I used Xtol Replenished would have to try this Bergger film. I then ask the OP if the scenes were metered reflective or incident. My post showed up in the thread no problem yesterday. Now I'm going through the thread after reading it last night and my post has vanished. Did I do something wrong? I'd like to know and I still would like to know how the scenes were metered.

A moderator would certainly have told you personally if you did anything inappropriate, don't worry. So there might be a technical problem with the forum instead? Did you ask our host Sean? I too saw something appear and disappear in an other (unrelated) thread.

No, I didn't ask Sean. I was just wondering if anybody else has had this happen? I didn't use any foul language or anything of that nature. I'm capable, but didn't!

Antonio, congratulations on your beautiful shots! I hope the Pancro holds up as well in 35mm. Your work has made it look like an amazing film stock. I have had good luck with Acros in XTOL, so glad to see it carries over to Pancro.

There is a newer PDF with mention to 135 and 120 formats, but it is about the same thing:

Beautiful results with this combo Antonio. Is x-tol in the mean time a reliable developper? I will try it this w-e but has no experience with the x-tol.

This has happened to me also, I think I must have missed up the posting procedure, or the forum software has a grudge against me.

I've been here a long time, and made what is probably too many posts.
I've certainly encountered a few situations where there has been a slight hiccup in my internet access to APUG, and as a result a post that I thought I had added hasn't actually made it to the thread.
I try to always check, but sometimes I don't.
Basically, if you actually see your completed post sitting there in the thread for all to see, it is probably going to be there for all time.
Sometimes (and very rarely) moderators end up having to edit threads in order to deal with problems. And it is not inconceivable that they might make a mistake and take out something that ought to stay.
I don't think that happened here.
Are you sure you actually clicked on the "Post Reply" button? I know I've made the mistake of forgetting to do that.

Bergger is touting that the 400 Pancro film is: "a mix of two panchromatic emulsions based on silver-bromide and silver-iodide, both differing from each other in grain size." I thought that having multiple emulsion layers with different grain/speed was the norm with modern BW films. Is there something fundamentally different that Bergger is doing with this film?

I'm not convinced about the hype...
But it is very nice we have choices...BERGGER
Is also going to cut sizes in sheet film in the future so you don't have to wait all year for ilford

My first essays... The film has a 'blanco' of 0,20 density versus FP4+. What is the reason? X-tol works well with T-max 400, so no no problem of the developer.
