The 553ELX is gone, whether temporarily or forever we will see. I left a bag somewhere, and when I returned, it was gone. Now I am chasing it.

That means that I will have to buy new body, poor me. I have shortlisted two 503s, which I find somewhat overpriced (as I dont need the WLF and the A-M screen), and a naked 500C/M which looks untouched. Alternatively, I could go down the Duracell rabbit role of buying another 553ELX, but mine might eventually return

So, let's celebrate the opportunity to make a trip to GASington Manor.

I miss my 553 big time, but...I accept that it never became "my" camera.

When I sold my 203, it left a big hole in my heart--so I replaced it immediately with a much less expensive 501CM. Not as versatile, but it works. Maybe another 203 in the future, but my new 907X is keeping me busy--and all my glass works (with adapters).
Hoping for the return of you 553 must be stressful for you, and my 80-year-old recommendation would be to find another 553 and make it "your own." Just a thought.

Maybe my post was not clear - I lost the 553 but it was returned to me, and then later I sold it. Now I miss it but i know that buying it again cannot turn back time.

I just came back from another trip. Double-burdened with film and digital bodies - next time I will make up my mind what to take with me.

I have taken 120 B&W Ilford HP-5 all over the world. 2008 in Iraq with temperatures over 100 degrees F. In Texas the same. No issues.

Enjoy your project!

Actual experience is a real eye-opener, eh? Live and learn. Much more productive than just talking about it on forums. Which are you likely to take next time?

Its a good question. I want to use the R6, but I think reality is going to overrule fantasy.

I am on a trip right now - Iceland, Greenland, and Canada. I brought Hasselbald SWC, 500C with 50mm & 80mm. 2 A12 backs. Plus an Olympus C7070 digital (28 to 110 equivalent) Yellow 12 filters and Red 25.

Best I could do. Still heavy.

Well done! And much love for SWC!

Thanks! My 500C has a Maxwell screen in it and the last version of the waist level finder with a +2 lens. For me it's the perfect travel camera. With an early 6 element Planar 80mm, it is my go to B&W camera.

500C not a fan. Mine gave me more trouble than anything else.

All my cameras undergo proper CLAs ideally at the factory (in case of leica) despite some advers comments on forums

I'm curious because my 501cm stopped working and I had it fixed at classic v in the uk 2 years ago.
It's still going strong and I have no reason to believe it will stop again.

Famous last words...

A 500C and a 501 are more than just a few years apart...

How "old" a Hasselblad body is depends on how much use it's had. Get an older but hardly used one and have it serviced, it'll work like new. The parts wear out from use, not from age. Well, unless you age it in a barrel of salt or something.

Lets say there are two bodies, both being used as a "daily driver" by a professional photographer. One is 50 years old, one is 30 years old.
So one has 20 years more of intensive usage.

Comparing a 50 year old shelf queen with a 30 year old daily rocker does not make much sense.

That wasn't the comparison I was making. Not all of these cameras received the same use. Not all "professional photographers" take the same number of photos. You apparently got a lemon or a lousy repair person (I'm guessing the latter).

I got a lemon, the repair person was very reputable. But 20 years between cameras do make a difference, unless physics dont apply.

As the Hasselblad kit is gone, I am getting ready for another trip, this time with my Leica gear. I am somehow leaning towards my R6, despite the fact that it is fully manual. Maybe that is where the 28-70 vario Elmar comes into play.
