I just finished 9 days photographing St. Mary's Cathedral and also doing a portrait session of the Cardinal on an 11x14 camera - what a nice thing to be able to do. Nice meeting you Glenn. If you ever need a career change perhaps a carnival barker would be an option, I can't believe how you worked that scene - it was fun.

It was interesting seeing the throngs of tourists coursing their way through the cathedral each day. Since most of my exposures were 2 to 3 hours there was time to look. The vast majority had digital cameras and that was their main activity. They would take their happy snaps and then spend time looking at the display, show their friends the display and then walk out after about 10 minutes. I have to believe their experience of the place was not much more than looking through their cameras. Strange phenomenon, ignore the real thing the play with a toy.

I know this is an old thread, but just found this excellent website, so I thought I'd put my hand up.

I'm a Kiwi, been living in Melbourne nearly 6 years. Love photography as a way of distracting myself from work.

Married with a 3yr old boy, so naturally I take a lot of family pictures. Use to take a lot of motorsport pictures, but since the lad turned up I think I've been to only one event.

Shooting 35mm colour negative mostly, with some B&W thrown in, and have a digicam. Disenchanted with the digital workflow. Spend hours tinkering with digital images on the computer turning wife into digital image processing widow. Love the simplicity of film, and of course photographs always look good.

Equipment:
Minolta AF lenses & 700si body
Ricoh GR-1 and GR-1v (usually one loaded with APX 100)
Olympus C-5060wz digicam

Film:
ISO 100 - Reala, APX 100 for B&W
ISO 400 - NPH, X-TRA.

First Question:
Looking for a 400 speed B&W that looks like APX 100 but not as grainy as Agfa APX 400.

I visited your galleries Nicole, and the look I like in B&W is this:

Film suggestion?

Hello everyone!
I am from Sydney. I use mainly 35mm gear but also own a "toy" Holga - does that qualify as medium format? Photography is my hobby and takes up all the spare time that a full time job and 3 teenagers allow. I keep re-enrolling in the local art centre's black & white courses as this keeps me in the darkroom on Thursday nights with the bonus of being with like-minded people. I am a member of one of the larger camera clubs and really enjoy the competitions, presentations and social interactions. I love looking at great images!! (My bank balance is much poorer for it.) Most common trait found in the photographers I have come across: generousity! APUG is another example of it.
Cheers,
Susan

Welcome, Susan. I'm from Melbourne. You should send a copy of this same message to the "Introduce Yourself To The APUG Community" thread, and you'll definitely receive many warm welcomes.

I think it qualifies you as large format, if you go by the ebay ads for "8x10 and larger"! You're not selling them on the side are you?

Welcome aboard Susan. I think you'll enjoy it here with the photographic dinosaurs - I do.

Cheers,
Graeme

Hey Susan, sorry I missed your post to this thread. A belated welcome from a fellow Sydney-sider.

I tried going to a camera club for a while but it didn't float my boat, so now I just go shooting with some workmates who are film shooters as well and we spend many an hour talking cameras/films, darkroom, prints etc at work... Two of us have darkrooms at home as well.

We also often go shooting together somewhat regularly, PM me if you're interested in tagging along. (In fact, there may be a trip up into the Blue Mountains Saturday, one of my partners-in-crime is getting familiar with his Linhof tech re recently acquired)

Kind Regards

Just had a thought; you're not associated with a camera club that meets at a football club in southern Sydney are you? If so, I think we've met ...

Hi Nexus, welcome, or maybe welcome back? I see you had quite a few posts in 2004 then went quiet. Back in the saddle perhaps? In any case, hope you enjoy shooting in Melbourne, you're in very good company down there...

Hi Glenn,
No is the quick answer - I am located north of the Bridge. Thanks for the offer re: meeting up. This coming weekend I and 10 like-minded (read: mad) photographers will also be heading up to the Blue Mountains on our way to Bathurst/Rockley/Hill End and Sofala for three days of landscape, cloudscape, anyscape shooting. I wonder what the chance of snow is?
Regards,
Susan

Hiya Glenn,

I tend to be online a lot but it takes me a while sometimes to come back here everyday, probably because there are a few non photo messageboards I go to and waste time there.

I do lurk from time to time though

I kinda flit in and out of photography as well. i really do need to knuckle down and get my technicals right. But i have finally started developing a year after spending $1500 on some good old darkroom equipment (go figure) all because i was too lazy to get into light tighting the laundry. But i'll get there!

I Know how you feel. I can only print at night cause my darkroom is actually my study/office and it's far from light tight and I haven't got around to light proofing it. Maybe one day soon....

Just wanna say hello to the fellow Aussies here. I am new to the forum, but have been lurking for a while. I didn't know there's such an Aussie thread until today, so I've decided to register

I am from Sydney as well

I am a Canon user and shoot mainly digital (hehe...) now, but I still enjoy shooting slides...where I came from anyway. I will say I spend most of my time photographing landscape, but my favourite subjects are travel and people.

Zane, welcome to APUG, I'm glad you decided to join us.

Sean, looks like we're getting a nice little Australian APUG gathering together. Can we graduate to our own regional group? Don't box us in though! :D
