Thanks.
Bob has obviously never been savaged by a delinquent plastic duck, those of us that have will fail to see the humour!
Are we agreed on this venue, or does the search continue?

I've looked but cant really find anymore that are in/next to a pub - if someone else can please let us know. Now, how about locations. there's the obvious of course, but there is also Uffington White Horse/ Dragon Hill not too far away ( 20 mins drive or so), Silbury Hill ... All quite challenging subjects to do justice to though - anymore?

Venue is fine with me. If necessary I can provide a linen basket for Dave, although he'll have to find his own reading matter...

Location-wise, ISTR a nice flight of canal locks at Devizes (about 9 miles from Avebury) on the Kennet and Avon canal, there are plenty of little villages about if thatched roofs are your thing and, given the reason for our gathering, it would seem churlish not to pay Lacock a visit (about 17 miles from Avebury)...

The Barge Inn at Honey Street has a campsite. They close it at some point in October, but exactly when depends on the weather (they worry about the shower block freezing !). Their number is 01672 851705. I've spoken to the landlady, June, and she said that they may be prepared to open up the site if asked nicely. The Barge is a lovely pub on the Kennet and Avon canal.

Just around the corner is Well Cottage ( 01672 851577 , http://www.well-cottage.org.uk) They have three double rooms. Apparently, these need to be booked well in advance. No mention of dicks or linen baskets on their website...

Alton Barnes/Honey Street is a very nice location in the Vale of Pewsey, just down the road from Avebury.

I do hope that was a typo there Allan!

honey street sounds good - does the pub have B&B rooms too, or only the other place you mention?

Love the sound of The Barge Inn:
The Barge has become the official site for the discerning Crop Circle Investigator. Everyone who is everyone congregates at The Barge to socialize and swap tales on their experiences in the fields. If you are a new traveller to England for the Crop Circles, this is the place to visit for up to date information on what's happening, and will give you the chance to meet some of the influential individuals within the Crop Circle Community. ... The public House has a special room at the rear dedicated to crop circle research, with two walls filled with diagrams and maps on where to find them, and a representation of the patterns themselves.
Crop circle research??? As in: "What is the best kind of string"? - "Is it best to use a 3 inch or 6 inch wide board to flatten the barley"? or, "How many crop circle researchers does it take to generate enough credulity to power a small light bulb"?...

Finding a place with enough rooms at a (fairly) sensible rate is not proving as easy as the Lake District, but at the moment it looks like the Pub with the duck and window in the floor has it....

Oops ! Yes, that was a typo.

No, despite being called an inn, the pub doesn't provide accommodation. I couldn't find any other B&Bs. Another option would be to rent a barge and park it at the pub !

Anyway, looks like your going with the duck.

Has anyone managed to book a room at the duck yet? I emailed them 2 weeks ago, but have heard nothing.
By way of a bump.
I have now managed to book a room for the Friday and Saturday, apparently the proprietors have been away on holiday and the caretakers didn't know how to use the computer!

Excellent! To summarise then -

The APUG Autumn 2005 UK Gathering is happening on the weekend of 15/16 October.

We're meeting up at "The Inn With The Well" (Dead Link Removed) in Ogbourne St George in Wiltshire on the Friday evening. Saturday is looking like a day of shooting in the locale (possibly including the stone circle at Avebury, sundry white horses and anything else that takes our fancy). On Sunday there's an optional visit to the Crown Monochrome Group's shindig in Trowbridge (speakers include John Blakemore and John Swannell, details here http://website.lineone.net/~crownmono/CrownMono7.html). The evenings will be (more than likely) spent in pursuit of beer, food and desultory gossip. And beer.

Anyone who likes the sound of this is more than welcome to join in for all or part of the weekend!

Sounds great! I'll be visiting family in Oxfordshire, but will come along for the Saturday and hopefully the Sunday too.

In the first half of the thread quite a few other people also expressed an interest. I've also got an long-time partner-in-crime joining us. He is a subscriber (just a very quiet one!).

Leon - as owner of the thread, is it possible for you to edit the topic to put the "Weekend of 15/16 Oct, Avebury, Wilts." or something similar in there? It might catch people's eyes.
