Well I chickened out this time - a combination of other comitments, and not being able to face an 8 hour drive. I'd REALLY like to make it next time.

While my failure to participate takes away any right to make requests for next time, but could we have it somewhere further south. As a Geordie it pains me to say that, but as I work on the South Coast, somewhere like Bath/Bristol/Oxford would be more practical.

Oh yeah - I getting married in September, so most of that's out too...

Mid October?

Ta Leon! When the other thread has reached 21 pages I think it's only a few people who are still checking it!

Avebury was mentioned on the other thread and is one of my favourite venues. Avoiding the bank holiday at the end of August would probably be a good thing (unless we want to take pictures of tourists!). Early November would give us the option of shooting some Autumn colour to let our B&W stock last a little longer (also a good option when it persists down (like it did every time we reached for our cameras in Keswick!))...

So long as there's food, wine, a little personal abuse and the universe going foom, I'm there!

Cobblers!

This is why I asked for a new thread, so that people who couldn't make it the last time would start tuning in again and let us know what kind of meet they could do!

The people I met at the last UK Gathering were a particularly decent group of individuals (Of course, I'll deny this later if quoted! Pack of scoundrels, the lot of them! :D ). I look forward to making the aquaintance of more of the UK APUGgers at the next one.

I'm quite keen on avebury too (you wouldnt have known it would you!). there is plenty to keep the rock huggers like me happy, lots of other places nearby, like Uffington castle and White Horse only a short drive away, always lots of people/ tourists around there for the people photographers, and I have often visited at the end of October in the past and had great weather

I think Marlborough is close by, and should be a good source of accommodation. Personally I favour mid to late October since (a) it avoids the wedding, and (b) I shall be ready for a break by then, and (c) It should be Autumn.

I’ve scanned a couple of negatives this evening thinking they were from last weekend, and what do you know, one is of Avebury – well one old rock looks much like any other, doesn’t it Leon? I shall post them in a moment.

I've been to the Avebury area a couple of times - oddly enough, never actually photographed the circle. Tried shooting the Avenue and West Kennet Long Barrow with no great success. Leon will have to give a masterclass...

Now, if we can arrange it for a full moon (Sunday Oct 16th - Moonrise 16:30, sunset 17:00), some night photography might be in order...

Cheers, Bob.

BTW, it stopped raining Sunday afternoon in Cumbria and didn't rain again during the day until Friday afternoon.... typical...

Never been to Avebury, but I drove through Marlborough a couple of weeks ago. It's a nice simple drive from here, so suits me great.

Oct 15-16 sounds a good compromise between too early and to wintery (hopefully - then again what did you expect in the lake district in Febuary, which reminds me - does the software still object to derwen****er?).

I saw your scans from Keswick (cyber-cafe above the Post Office) - really like the drowned tree - that'll make a nice print.

Backlog of work means I still have about 15 rolls of 120 FP4+ & Maco 820c and a dozen 4x5's to develop and to contact the lot.... Probably be 2 weeks before I actually get to print anything (always assuming anything worth printing!)...

Cheers, Bob.

I sure everyone's a winner - mine always are; until developed.

Sort of thinking aloud here, bear with me.
The Crown Monochrome Group say they are holding another Monochrome Spectacular on the 16th October in Trowbridge which is close to Avebury. Those that attended last year enjoyed the event, and I for one intend going this year; subject to seeing their programme of speakers course. May I suggest then that our Avebury rock hugging fest is scheduled for the Saturday 15th October. I envisage travelling down on the Friday evening to a yet to be selected hotel so that an early(ish) start can be scheduled for the Saturday morning at the Ring followed by whatever other delights the area has to offer. I am open to guidance with regard to venues. Those that don’t fancy the Crown event can continue snapping through Sunday.
Any thoughts?

Provisionally, 16 Oct Trowbridge / Avebury sounds good.

All my film from the Keswick Gathering is now souped and sorted. Lightbox and loupe neg inspection looks promising (but what do I know?! ). Will hopefully get into the darkroom this weekend and post some images shortly thereafter.

Same here (but negatives more "hopeful" than "promising" ). Will make contacts tonight and try a print or two by the weekend.

Sounds a good idea re' 15th Oct - I did mean to pop along to the Crown Monochrome Group thingy last year but work intervened...

The difference is probably more an indication of my foolish optimism than anything else, Bob!

I look forward very much to seeing what you come up with.

With the nights drawing in and Christmas decorations imminently expected to appear in supermarkets throughout the land  I thought it might be an idea to <bump> this thread and see who we can interest in The Autumn 2005 APUG UK Gathering!

The first UK Gathering was a resounding (and cold, wet and windy!) success where hardy souls of great photographic skill and merit were joined in a spirit of artistic fulfillment. Others (like myself) turned up as well, made irreverent comments, banged off a few shots and drank beer!

I think I'm pretty safe in saying that, despite the inclement weather, a good time was had by all and it was great to be able to put faces to names.

The next gathering has been proposed for the 15th / 16th of October 2005 in the village of Avebury, Wiltshire (famous for its stone circle) with a possible trip to the Crown Monochrome Group's "Monochrome Spectacular" on the 16th in Trowbridge (about forty minutes away). This will hopefully be slightly more accessible than Keswick for our southern contingent!

If you're interested in attending, please say, "Aye!"

If you know of a decent rally point (preferably equipped with beer, food, B&B and an area we can gather to view prints), a decent campsite (for the canvas lovers amongst us) or good shooting locations in the locale, please say where!

All the best,

Frank

aye ... I stayed in the Merlin Hotel in Marlborough once. Bed and breakfast consisted of a very small double bed (a single really) and a bread roll, jam sachet and coffee brought to your room in teh morning. Oh, and the huge stack of Porno mags hidden in the linen box were absolutely free .... suffice to say, I vowed never to stay there again.

Try keeping me away!
Is that from the meeting in general, or the Merlin Hotel in particular?

There are a few camping sites in the area around Marlborough, but I've not stayed at any. I'll try and have a poke around and check them out if I'm in the area, which I probably will be in the next month.

I'd love to join everyone, but I have a feeling the dates coincide with a trip to Scotland I've got planned. Shame really, as we all know how dreadful Scotland is for photography.
