It was intermittent for a while. Our CDN had options to minify our JS which typically speeds things up, but turns out does not play nice with vBulletin editor. I turned this off yesterday but I think it's taken a while to propagate (our CDN serves our content via 12 different global datacenters). Hopefully it's fully kicked in now.

Hmmm... OK, will keep looking out for any further occurrences of this issue, as it may still not be fixed than, but hopefully, it is, as it is one of the higher priority issues, as it directly hampers usage of APUG.

That's odd. Is anyone still seeing this? It might have been temporary while our content delivery system was updating. I have been unable to reproduce it. Those seeing it, do you have any unusual plugins running on your browsers?

So far most everything is ok. The main issue at the moment is a text character problem with foreign languages. I have a specialist that can fix this but he is a bit slow in his communications. Hopefully that charset issue will be resolved soon.

I am still getting this issue. I use Google Chrome on a PC.

I am having issues with my avatar going missing in the threads sometimes. It's back in the gallery section though.

I think that's unrelated. I recently moved all avatars out of the database and into the file system so it could be some weirdness with your avatar file. The gallery issue was a bad piece of code that I corrected. You may want to try saving your avatar to your PC, change the file name, then re-load it into APUG. I would be curious to know if that helps.

Thanks

That's odd. I know several who could reproduce the issue and after some changes it was corrected on their end. Maybe clear your chrome cache as I have had problems in the past with chrome not clearing out cache (for example changing web html and changes not being reflected in chrome even after refreshes). Is it an issue in firefox for you as well?

Thanks

The avatar issue seems like it is "fixing itself", as it is not correct (shows only "Jerevans' avatar" as a text) when I just have posted an answer in a thread sometimes, but after revisiting the thread the avatar is there, displayed correctly. I'll report back if I find anything of use.

I have seen this happen too. There definitely is some minor issue with the new avatar setup. Not a real big deal, but worth investigating and fixing in the long run.

Will keep watching out for this issue to see if it is still happening at this time.

I just ran a script to rebuild all avatar images, that might fix it.

Icons OK

No luck here yet. Although that could just be the company firewall being slow to catch up & hard to force a refresh. Safari 5.1.1 on Windows, fwiw. If I remember, I'll check it at home tonight.

BTW: same for the "Advanced" reply, it was interesting to get an image attached this way.

Works fine at home, where I have full control over proxy and firewall. So, I suppose it's a matter of time before it is "automagically" fixed on other locations.

Realize that DNS issues can be local problems.

Every ISP maintains a DNS cache, retaining DNS queries for a period of hours (configurable).

If you try to access this site before it has timed out of the DNS cache on your local ISP, you'll use the cached address rather than the updated one.

This is something you cannot control. The DNS cache will purge itself when the entries get too old, but that might be as long as 24 hours.

APUG went down, the message was from Cloud Nine or whatever it's called and said there was no cached images of the pages and that the server was offline.

Hi Ian, what time did that happen and how long before you could get back in? Cloudflare is our CDN (content delivery network). If APUG becomes unresponsive for a short time then that message may appear.

Hi Sean, was down a couple of hours, but then I went to IE which I never normally use and it was OK. Maybe an issue here but I've never seen anything like it before and only affected APUG, I usually have multiple tabs open. I am on Aurora which is pre-release but it's been the most rock solid Browser I've used in a very long time.

The two hours just before I posted

Can you guys recall what time it happened. If the site is running a backup it can be down for 2-3 minutes, that might throw the no cached pages error up. On that error page is a link to reload the site, usually clicking that gets you right back in. I have spoken with the company to say this link is not visible enough. If someone does not click the link then it could take an hour or so for the site to show up again. I'll look into it further.

Sean - it went down here on the US east coast about 12:45 (noon hour). I don't know how long it lasted as I had to go back to work.

Would appear from my browser history that the site went down just after 17.20 GMT. I did click on Cloudfire's reload link but nothing happened.

I've adjusted my server monitoring so should be able to catch it if it happens again.
*update, now have my monitoring to check a specific page on apug and specific text. This runs every 15mins. I may bump this down to 5mins during waking hours to see if I can catch any issues.

I think you are getting pretty close to ironing out the issues after the migration. I don't see any of the Avatar issues anymore, and the other main issues seem fixed as well. Hope you can get the last things with the CDN sorted out and the warning message for the site backup clearer if that is an issue.

Login issue

Hi Sean,

I have reported this issue before, but during login a vBulletin variable is displayed when language is set to other than English. I have now made a screenshot of this issue with language set to Italian. See attachment.

Will have a look at the variable soon. One thing I am happy about recently are the backups. I spent weeks working on this (rsync and mysqldumps). We now have superior backups than before. Automated off-site nightly backups that are Geo-redundant. I also take weekly full encrypted backups to a local server at home. I spent the last 4 days building a full blown web server at home to test the backups in a disaster recovery scenario. All went well, I had a full blown APUG running at home on my local web server via the backups being implemented to it  That's 23GB of data and a 1.3GB database dump.

New issues with APUG Video section

Hi Sean,

After adding two new video links, I now noticed two new issues in the APUG Video section I haven't seen before, and that seem related to recent changes, including the new editor that is now also used in the video section:

1) - In IE(8) browser, the flash video objects fail to load in the window and hence videos can not be viewed. See the attachments. This is a rather big issue. I don't see the same issue in Firefox, Opera, Chrome or Safari. *** Please note: *** I have no issue watching exactly the same videos directly on YouTube in IE, so there seems no specific issue with flash in IE in my browser. Please also note this is on Windows XP, SP3 with all recent updates and fixes and up to date versions of browsers.

2) - When I try to "Edit Media" to change for example the discription of the video media, as soon as I hit the "Edit Media" button on the edit page, the editing fails with a warning saying that the "Window will be closed and edits will be lost" (translated from Dutch, but see the partial English warning message in the Chrome screenshot). The editing does fail, it is not saved, therefore it is now impossible to edit the description of added videos.

The display issue seems fixed after I upgraded to the latest version of Flash Player (Plug-In version 11.1.102.55, ActiveX-version 10.3.183.10). I can now watch the APUG videos again in IE. I also emptied all cached settings using the Flash Player Settings Manager, so it might actually be related to some cached setting on my computer...

Still interested to know if other people had similar issues with the previous version of Flash Player and IE.

Thanks Marco, will get the bug report module added to the helpdesk some time today.

George, yes I find it far more responsive. We are also now in a scalable cloud environment at Joyent.com.. which means within seconds I can scale the server spec up or down as needed. Also, our CDN serves our data from 12 global data centers meaning those in Europe see gallery images via servers in Europe which greatly increases their local load times. Our CDN must have a data center in my neck of the woods as well since all the gallery images load instantly.
