Hey guys/gals.

My father Richard Ide was a member of Apug. He recently passed away. Looking through his posts, I realize he was smarter then he looked. He was a helpful contributor to the apug community. More then anyone in my family knew. Anyways I was happy to see many people have benefitted from his knowledge.

However, I'm currently left with all of his photography equipment. He owned a photography reproduction company through his life and this was his favorite hobby. I take pictures with a phone haha. I did pay attention while growing up, as much as I could but I dont know what half of the stuff is. I dont have the time to list every item individually and just wondering what I can do with all of it. I can take pictures of things and have a few already. Other then his camera bag and the 8x10 in a suitcase he dragged everywhere. I won't use any of it. I don't necessarily want to give it all away either.

Just curious on the communities thoughts on what I should do with it all. I probably have 80 lenses various things from small to very large as well as some older cameras, tripods, heads, I have a huge box of bulbs for older cameras and it would be a shame to toss it when someone somewhere could use it. I would love to categorize and list it systematically, but that's an impossible task.

If anyone knew him and sold him anything and wants it back let me know.

Jeremy - so sorry for your loss. Your father's contributions here were much appreciated.
Where are you in Ontario? There may be members nearby who would be able to help you list what you have, and give advice on what to do with it.
By the way, you might find that this thread gets moved to another sub-forum, as this part of the site is for Feedback about how the site operates. Don't worry about the misplacement - if it is easily corrected by the moderators and you should have no problem finding it if it is moved.

Hi Jeremy
I'm really sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. I remember him
https://www.photrio.com/forum/members/richard-ide.8760/
he sometimes cracked me up: https://www.photrio.com/forum/threads/tattoos.114612/page-2#post-1515001

If you can't find a local appugger to help you ID some of the gear and have a cell phone handy
you might be able to post a few snapshots of different things you have in a thread and people here might be able to
post in the thread what exactly you have. There's a lot of knowledgable people here who know everything from obscure weird 19th century do-dads
to 1970s Nikon. I'm not sure where you would sell the stuff ( maybe here in the classifides? )
but that might require you to get a subscription ( pretty low cost ). There is a pretty active classifides section here
and it is less of a wild wild west show than Ebay ( but ebay will give you a wider net to cast ).

Best of luck
John

Wow, that is very sad, a life-changing event. My condolences. As for his photographic equipment, there is a renewed interest in some types of film equipment. I realize it is a pain in the behind, but selling via eBay could find some suitable buyers. Could you make an inventory? Folks here could advise. For example
  • Leica and Rollei equipment sell well.
  • Semi-electronic era consumer-grade SLR cameras do not sell for much (but even that market may be slowly turning).
  • Off-brand "kit" zoom lenses 80-210mm you can barely give away.
  • 4x5" field cameras sell pretty well (especially Deardorff), but monorail models not very well
