I recall listen to Robert Shanebrook who wrote Making Kodak Film talk about the process of skiving (thinned at the edges) backing paper on a podcast he was a guest on, and IIRC he said it was phased out in the 1990s as unnecessary.

This paper:

Is reported to be light proof without further coating from people to who have used it as backing paper, but I haven't tried it myself yet.

I do have a copy of the relevant ISO document, and the revision is from 2000. I can share it privately if you want.

Not necessary. Just tell us what, if anything, it specifies wrt thickness.

Not much.

The following thickness values shall be maintained:
  • backing paper: 0,06 mm minimum and 0,12 mm maximum;
  • backing paper plus film: 0,24 mm +/- 0,04 mm;
  • backing paper plus film and paster tape: 0,40 mm +/-0,10 mm.
