Just curious. I have a bit of vintage gear, papers, chems and some darkroom kit looking for a home. It might be worth a look if you are in the lower South Island.

Hi,

I just joined in the last week - based in Waimate. I'm just getting back into this after nearly 40 years. I have just developed by first films over the last few days.

Where are you and what have you got?

Sorry to resurrect - still looking for a home? I'm up in the Waikato but trying (depends how much my wife will tolerate) to set up a darkroom.

Hey, still haven't quite organised this. I'll have 2 weeks off in early July and plan to get it underway then.

Just a bit of a side note, my Gallery and Gold Street Studios are doing a swap of artists and shows featuring alternative printing, next fall (2025) a group of Australian photographers will exhibit at my gallery and in Feb or March of 2027 myself and a couple of Canadian artists are going to exhibit in Australia. plans are under way no formal announcement, but I thought I would put it out there. I plan to visit for the show with my wife and main assistant , we are hopefully going to do a road trip from Perth to the east side near Melbourne, not sure how feasible this road trip is, what side of the road do you guys drive on and is it true the toilet flushes the opposite way than in Canada...hmmmmmm

Hey Bob, not sure if you intended to post this here as this thread was for New Zealand rather than Australia, however if you're flying all the way to Australia you should check out New Zealand at the same time as it's only another 2.5 hours away and a very beautiful country.

Never driven from Perth to Melbourne (I grew up in Sydney) but that's about a 2200 mile drive and I'd imagine loooong stretches of that are going to be very empty countryside, I don't think there's much of anything between Perth and Adelaide and it's not something that I'd ever choose to do.

We drive on the left-hand side of the road here (opposite to the USA) and as far as I know the toilet flushes whichever direction it wants to but my experience is that the operating mechanism of toilets around here tend to be different to the ones in north America (in terms of how the bowl drains).

Left hand side driving and flush toilets. I'm impressed 😁

Not sure if I could survive flying that long, sure would love to see New Zealand. So many lovely places 😊

It's feasible but you might want to think it through... takes a few days without stopping for much other than 'gas', food and sleep. Have done it once, and enjoyed it regardless of people saying 'it's all the same and boring'. Never been to Gold Street Studios myself, might have to make the effort (1.5hrs from me... just checked!) if this comes to fruition.

Andrew, 2200 miles is quite a long haul I agree, it may make more sense to fly to NZ then Australia, I have long wished a trip to NZ, it would be nice to catch up with Frodo my dear friend who lives there. Just need to figure out costs of flights.

Nige, long distance driving is not out of the question for us as we have done it before here in NA, drove back from Fogo Island to Toronto last summer , and if we come over we are bringing our young assistant with us and she loves driving, as does my wife.

I will have to check all the dynamics of this in advance, I do like the idea of NZ and then Melbourne, - is the Perth to Melbourne mostly inland driving or is it mostly coastal driving, that would make a huge difference in our decision making.

Right now I think there is a very good chance this is happening, I will know better when our show is printed and shipped, as well find out what Gold Studios are intending for a space to show our work and possible agenda.

This is a dream trip and my wife and I are putting aside moneys to do this. I hope I do get to meet some of you, I have met Sean personally here in Toronto, Silvershack hosted the first APUG conference in 2006 and he attended and it was great seeing him, I wonder if he is bald or grey haired now.

Sounds like my last trip to visit my son in London for Christmas... couple of weeks turned into 5+ haha! Some carriers do go via NZ (Auckland) so worth exploring.

Depends on what you call coastal. The only true coastal road would be the Great Ocean Road as it follows the coast in sections, the other 'coastal' routes 'touch' the coast at points unless you detour off them. From Perth to Norseman can be coastal (via Esperance) or inland. From there to Ceduna is mostly inland, touching the coast in places (some of which are huge cliffs). Not many options (accom or sight-seeing) along this section. A section of this road is straight for either 96kms or miles. Then you can choose between direct (inland) or coastal to get to Port Augusta. After that you can pick several inland routes or head south to pick up the Great Ocean Road (suggest you read up about this). Where there's a coastal option, you need to add days to the trip (longer driving times and more to stop and look at).

While you can drive Perth to Melb in 4-5 days, that is a Le Mans type trip. Some people (the Grey Nomads) take months to get across. What time of the year this happens can also make a difference to what an agenda might be.

Bob, it is a wonderful trip across the bottom of the continent, especially as you get to traverse the edge of the Nullarbor plain, which is treeless (Null Arbor no tree). Unfortunately, if you intend to cross the Nullarbor in February, more or less, then prepare for the possibility of extreme heat, it is pretty much the hottest time of the year.

I've done approximately 35-36 crossings of the Nullarbor, some in a hurry, others leisurely and checking out the scenery, even worked across the area in 1974. The first roughly 1000km is pretty much driving through bushland type of vegetation, as you approach the Great Australian Bite, you will be alongside the ocean in places and there are quite a few viewpoints worthy of a stop and look. It's about 3440km from Perth to Melbourne, Ellie's place is about 110km west of Melbourne, so in round figures, 3330km to Gold Street studios.

One issue is water, drinking water that is, from Norseman in WA through to Ceduna in SA, it is approximately 1200km with no water on tap. Not really an issue in this day and age, but if you stop pretty much anywhere, there isn't much water for doing anything other than drinking and/or cooking.

Also, no night driving, unless you wish to meet up with a kangaroo, or worse still but rarely, a camel.

Looking forward to meeting you.

Hi Mick

We are in the process of working this out, my contact is Kim Sinclair who is curating the Australian show that will be in my gallery and I have picked two other artists plus myself for our contribution to a show in Melbourne, we are not sure where , Elllie Young is the host gallery and she will determine where we show. It will be Feb/ March 2027 timeline , sounds like a long time from now but not really when one is preparing shows.
I am now thinking I would kick myself in the ass if we did not go to NZ , I have client/friends there and I have always had a fascination , ( they are known for underhandfastball as are Canadians) . They will be playing so I will be able to catch a game and see them crowhop pitch.
It will be nice to meet you as well

regards
Bob
