cynical malarkey, in my opinion. "Most" are pretty decent people, in my experience... after a few hundred purchases.
I concur. Most sellers are reasonable, if not honest. However, it's always best to exercise a modicum of caution with on-line retailers.

Now he's gone and paid me back £450 through PayPal and sent me a cheque for £500. What was the problem with sending me the full amount through PayPal? What's he playing at. Somebody is getting some stinking feedback.

eBay has been one of the greatest assets to my photo addiction. I have purchased 95% of my camera equipment on eBay. The key for me is feedback feedback feedback. I always check feedback. Is the seller is questionable you can almost always tell from the feedback. Also I read the write-up on the item if it don't pass the old stink test then I move on. I don't buy really exotic items so if I feel a little hinkie about the auction I just move on. Right now I am going to move up to LF and am shopping eBay like a fiend. Lookin for a 4X5 and a few pieces of glass (90mm, 150mm, 300-360mm)

I don't know if this applies to your seller, but sometimes a person's PayPal account will not allow a transfer of over $500.

Jarvman, sad to hear of your ordeal, what a bummer! I hope and trust that all will work out in the end. Easy for me to say, but please don't let this stuff deflect you from journey into the world of Large Format. Dust yourself down and keep heading straight ahead!
Good light.

No need whatsoever to get in touch with Paypal or anyone else. He can simply refund the payment to you which restores everyone back to a whole condition - no charges, no fees, just as if the transaction never happened. If he has already sent funds as if he were paying you rather than refunding, just refund them to him. This will leave him whole. Then he can refund your original payment, leaving you whole.

As far as the $500, there is a limit on receiving into personal accounts as follows. Just a shot in the dark:

4.1 Personal Account Receiving Limit. If you have a Personal Account, you may not receive more than $500.00 USD per month in funds when the sender selects as the "category of purchase": (a) eBay item, (b) auction goods, or (c) goods-other. Once you have received $500.00 USD in a month, we will place subsequent payments in pending status, and you will be required to upgrade to a Premier or Business Account to accept the pending payments.

Hope this helps.

Jon
Get in touch with Paypal and explain this is a refund, they should waive the charges. Failing that send the seller an invoice for the costs incurred.

I am not sorry. What is this Jarvman, the 5th or 6th camera in the last six months you've had issues with? And we have heard in excruciating detail the issues with each and every one.

Let's see,

there was the R3A, the C330, the Fuji 690, the Mamiya 7ii, the Tech V... hell, I can't remember them all...

This reminds me of the kid from Canada we almost ran off the board because, in the end analysis, all he wanted to do was hear himself talk.

Hi Jarvaman,
Now I dont use e bay as I like to see the colour of a mans eyes before giving him my money and if you see and feel before you buy I figure youve no come back if you buy a pup, its just the way I do busness.

Any way to the point of my post, a couple of months back I was in Camarthen Cameras picking up my Hasselblad body that had been off for repair and service and had a look round the secondhand selection as you do, I noticed 3 LF kits there I think one was 5x7 but am sure the others were 4x5.
There was a mono rail kit the name of which escapes me that looked very nice and if I remember correctly the price was £650. ish.
I see you give your location as Cardiff. Cardiff to Camarthen less than 1hr traveling, see the kit before paying, got to be worth a phone call.

Regards Paul.

Of course. I have used them with the guy with the magazine who was a total jerk, and someone else who got very threatening...
but they screw up the reading of threads. I hope maybe someone might see that their behavior is a bit off and correct it on their own.

Not that I have.

I haven't criticized Jarvman for his other posts, some good reading on opinions of photographers...

Perhaps I am wrong and many on the board here like hearing wining about this camera and that camera and how he got screwed by buying a C330 with crappy lens, etc. etc., and so on, and so on...

If so I apologize to all. Maybe I just have to take the good with the bad, but it would be nicer if he self moderated his bitches about equipment. That's all.

Profoundest apologies mr Jupiter I'm sorry you've had to endure my whining. Nope you got them all, a quick recap I dropped the R3A and the rangefinder is a bit jarred which I still love using and wouldn't think of selling, MY fault completely. I was asking for advice on somewhere to fix it, not bitching, but seeing as it's so slightly out it is still completely useable. I bought a dodgy fungus coated lens for the 330 which I sent back and still have the camera which is in beautiful condition and am thinking if I get a decent lens for it I can start shooting some 6x6 and actually get something out of it. I jumped the gun with buying a mamiya 7 definately, nothing wrong with it just can't get along with the 6x7 format at all and sold it for the same price when I accuired the Fuji for a very nice price, another camera I have no quarrels with, I absolutely love it and would never think of selling it. I'm even looking for one now in the other focal length. Then there's the Technika which I've just been burned on which would've opened me up to using 4x5 with the movements that go with it and will definately think of getting something in this format. Got it? So I haven't had issues with 5 or 6 cameras. I wouldn't have left a snide remark if you were out of pocket for a camera that was a piece of junk despite the seller insisting it was in good condition.

Apology accepted. As my Dear Old Dad, may he rest in peace, would have said... just deal with it. It's not very interesting to a lot of us.

I personally would never send those quantities of money to someone I have no business relationship and certainly little recourse with. I have over 300 transactions on EBay, maybe four or five were of questionable nature and in total, I might be out 150 dollars over 8 years. If I buy on speculation, I evaluate my risk, sometimes I win, sometimes I lose, but you'll never hear about it.

That is all I have to say about that.

But if it's not of interest to you then why respond at all? The reson I come to this forum is because the comments are always very helpful and contructive and I learn alot here. Why not vent to people who share the same interests?

Reading the listing it sounded far better than you describe.

Commendations on your eBay record. I've had some really good buys there too. All my camera kit is second hand from there and compared to what I've lost on this I've saved a bundle overall. Just a shame I've had two duds in a small space of time. The lens problem was easily amendable. The guy took it back no problem so I never lost out on that. I was asking here whether it was fixable and tried my hardest to clean it with meths but to no avail. Again, looking for constructive ideas not bitching. I just re visited that thread and your posts were helpful towards me then. My last word on it. :D
