Hi everybody, greeting from Italy!

I began my exploration of photography thanks to my father and his Nikon F-401S 35mm, which I began using when I was a kid and digital compact cameras were becoming increasingly popular. As film development costs rose, I briefly switched to digital compact cameras with an Olympus, but I really missed the comfortable, steady grip of a more "professional" camera, so I finally got a Nikon D3100 with an 18-55mm lens. From there, I began shooting and experimenting like never before, even though I still felt "caged" by the technical limitations of Nikon's entry-level camera. After several years, I then decided to take the plunge and upgrade to a full-frame; I've always stuck with Nikon, buying a used D3 to regain the autofocus of the old lenses I had and to overcome the limitations of ISO, frames per second, and so on. After a few years of not taking photos as much as I used to (and as much as I wanted to), partly due to my job, I finally realized that what really interests me is portraiture and landscape photography. I like to give meaning, depth, and a story to my shots.
Now I'm here to seek help in embarking on a new path: entering the world of old-fashioned photography with the precision and convenience of digital.

Digital and photographic can't be compared. The film camera can't show you your picture on the back of the camera. With film, you need a dependable technique, because you can know what you have till its far too late to re-shoot. The main advantage of film is that you can make nice pictures and never have to touch or even think about a damn computer, which is the bane of our existence.

Welcome to the forum.
As you may have gleaned already, there is a wide variety of people here, with a wide range of experience, interests and attitudes.
We hope you enjoy participating here. We hope we can assist you. And we look forward to hearing more from you.
There is a strong core of people on Photrio who maintain a focus on film and alternative process based photography. But there are also many people who either have feet in both camps, or are primarily or exclusively using digital tools.
Have fun!

Maybe nowadays we simply do not accept that a photo can be slightly out of focus, that has a heavy grain by the film and so on, because we want to see perfection.

At a cost of doing photos that are dead silent.

Having the possibility to immediately check the shot has certainly "reduced" the attention that one puts into composing or controlling the photo, but it is also true that you can immediately see any errors in the composition of the image or the exposure and this makes you grow much faster than waiting a couple of weeks to find out that you have taken 36 photos that should be thrown away (any reference to kids being unaware of the rule of thirds is entirely intentional).

Film is great, digital is great. We don't have to compare them or choose between them!
Btw, I agree with your reasoning w.r.t. faster learning due to a shorter feedback cycle. It has always been the same for me.

Thank you both for the welcome, it takes all sorts to make a world and this saying is more true than ever in the world of photography, and rightly so. As per name of the forum, we have three! 🤣

Welcome to the forum. Many of us here use both and we tend to frown on those who insist on bashing one or the other. Cheers!

Agreed. I like film as a hobby. And digital for real estate listings on the MLS, and shooting things like stripping down cameras and electronics for overhauls.
