Amber Glass Bottles

i'm trying to find these glass bottles for storing my developer. can't find them anywhere. bh has them but is out of stock. any ideas?

Another question, plastic bottles would do fine with stop bath and fixer right?

Clear glass or good thick plastic are good enough. There is no reason to use amber bottles. You don't store the developer out in daylight do you?? It is in the darkroom, right? That should be dim enough.

None of the ones around here even use glass anymore. It's all amber plastic. Somewhat stupid. I went looking for one for the sensitizing solution for salt printing...

Going to have to order online. Blargh.

Well, if you are storing Silver Nitrate, then amber glass is best or dark plastic for the solid crystals. But you do not need dark storage containers for developers.

Try getting juice in a glass bottle and reusing it.

I like B+H's amber glass bottles. When topped off, their capacity is almost exactly as claimed. They came with rather dinky feeling plastic caps. I might try stoppers sometime.

Therein lies the problem with B&H. Given a product order of many items, it's almost impossible to order at a time when all 18 are in stock. They rotate frequently. Just wait and they'll be back. Briefly. I bought them out of stock a few weeks back; they only had three bottles though...

Ron's right. Brown Amber glass might be preferred but not necessary. Just because that's what I use is no reason for the world to follow MY example.

Well- I guess I might be the sole voice of dissent here. I've had FAR greater success using (can't speak about amber since I've never used them) but BROWN glass bottles than plastic. I find if you use a good quality chemistry type brown glass bottle and keep it filled to the brim, then your chems can last up to 3x longer... perhaps it's just the plastic I was using was poor grade or something - I don't know. But that's been my experience.

Well i hear developers keep longer in glass bottles because oxygen go through plastic bottles.. they're not too expensive anyways, so i'll go with glass.

Mine came from specialty bottle. Best $200 I ever spent next to the air filter and water filter.

Buy the caps with the cone insert and two for every bottle. Dry the lip befor sealing.

Clear bottles can be kept in a box.

Plastic may or may not be air tight. Certain plastics breath.

You can see if glas bottles are clean.

I use Grolsch Beer bottles that are dark green with rubber stopper "flip top" caps....and besides I get to drink the beer first!! They also come in a variety of sizes. cheers!

Within the Glass Bottle category they list Amber as well as Clear and Blue.

Personally I choose glass over plastic because I believe the plastic will pass air. There is no known reason not to use glass and a lot of hearsay or rumor or myth in using plastic.

If you're not buying hundreds of bottles then a dozen glass won't cost a significant amount over plastic. You'll have peace of mind. That's valuable.

Just bought some 1 litre with the hinged cap, amber beer bottles from a home brewers supply. $20 for 6. They had larger and smaller ones, however, they weren't what I was lloking for so I didn't pay any attention to the sizes. Might be a place to look.

Unless your darkroom is light at least 8 hours per day and uses a lot of UV, there is NOTHING in a developer solution that is overly light sensitive. You would have to BLAST it with high intensity light to cause a problem with keeping the developer around.

The big problem is AIR. Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide are your enemies.

I did what some of the others did -- go down to the local beer store and buy some one liter bottles of beer (brown or green) that have self-sealing flip tops. It's a two-for-one deal. Another plus (besides the obvious) is that you can always go down to get another one if you find you need more, and you don't have to pay for shipping.

See, that would work for most people...but what I want to use it for wouldn't really work. I'm wanting the smaller ones with the narrow mouth for both my sensitizing solution and storing Rodinal and HC-110 for use with syringes. I can get a few of the baby medicine topper plastic thingies for use with syringes if I can find the bottles.

And we all know that Rodinal in a well-capped, air-tight glass bottle will last a very, very long time.

Can't tell where you are located. I use mt 2 liter soda bottles and they work great. The caps seal over & over, again & again. The plastic doesn't interfere with the chemicals.

Try them & see if they work for you.

Can't beat the cost!

If you are in the USA and there is a Trader Joe's near you, buy a couple of bottles of cold pressed flax oil for use in your morning oatmeal (with honey). They come in dark amber glass bottles which you can re-use for your chemicals. The anti-oxidants in the flax oil will counteract any carcinogens you expose yourself to in the darkroom.
