OK, well I finally found the D103, (and I found a suitable plug adapter so I could actually power it on ).

I would guess it is slightly different to the D102 in the design of the measuring head.

Attached are some images of my D103:

#1, Control Unit
#2, Measuring head (side view)
#3, Measuring head (top view) - note two push-buttons, one green, one black.
#3, Measuring head (base view, open)
#4, Measuring head (base view, closed) - note this is with control unit ON and set to Reflective measurement, and shows built-in lamp operating
#5, Control Unit, () - shows pots for calibration
#6, Control Unit - ON, set to Reflection (measuring head not closed)
#7, Control Unit - ON, set to Transmission (measuring head not closed)

Why the unit displays 8.92 set to reflective disturbs me ...

I cannot establish what the Black and Green buttons do. I can only guess they are either part of the calibration system or part of the measuring system. The instructions for the D102 refer to "pressing the button on the measuring head", but this obviously has two.

I've got a Stouffer 21-step transmission wedge if that's going to help me calibrate it, but I hate to go near those little trimpots unless I am absolutely sure about what I'm doing - they're not robust enough to stand a lot of fiddling.

So the D102 just has the black one, with a spare hole for the green one.

So by a process of elimination .... the green one does what? We need Sherlock!

Press the green button in reflective or transmission mode and and keep it pressed to adjust with one of the right potentiometer screws on the backside of the densitometer, the high channel reading. To adjust the low channel, keep the black button pressed until adjustment.

Sherlock out...
