agfa-gevaert D102 densitometer any knowledge wanted

Late one night I made an impulse buy, it was an Agfa d102 densitometer on ebay for £10/$18. Does any one know how it works and what it can be used for. Have I bought a novelty doorstop?

I to bought one of these densitometers a year or so ago and then couldn't figure it out. I contacted Agfa and they sent me an instruction sheet for their D103. I must admit though since then its been a bit of a door stop as i prefer to use the densitometer mode on my analyser pro.

Steve , any chance of sending me a scan of the instruction sheet, basically I want to know how to measure reflected density/ transmission density. I cant work out how the meter can measure one or the other, does it just measure reflected density? Any information will be most appreciated.

Steve, could you send me a scan of the D103 instruction sheet as well? I have a D104 that I sort of know how to use, but I don't know how the advanced calibration feature works. (Haven't needed it so far, touch wood).

Usage is straitforwad.
There is a switch to go in reflexion or transmission.
For transmission you've to put the neg in a light table, and measure it by pressing the button on the head.
fr reflexion, pressing the button on the head, the measuring light will come on and the D102 will make the measurement.
There are multi turn adjustable resistors to calibrate the unit, and that's all

i had two ofthese. thy work just fine as reflection and transmission densitometrs. they were sold as part of an agfa stat camerafor pre-press work. for transmission measurements you need a light source such as a ligh table for reflection he built-in light source is all that is needed. just aim the target in the foot stand ,push the head down and read the density off the led dsplay. my experience was that they are very accurate and repeatable. godd catch for that money. i sold mine for 100 gbp each!

no door stop.It was my first densitometer and I used it a lot for film and paper.Its big advantage is that it does reflection and transmission and is easily calibrated.You got it for a song.I eventually moved on to a Heiland densitometer,which I love but the Agfa was a great start.Mine came from an old stat camera

Well, that manual remains enigmatic to me...




Control unit

-) right switch: on/off

-) left switch: up=reflective down=transmissive


Sensor-unit

-) lateral crosshair = transmissive

-) central crosshair = reflective

The sensor-unit has to be pressed onto the film.


Reflective Metering

It is advised to control calibration with the accompanied test-card. density-deviations of +/- 0.05 are tolarable.
Otherwise re-calibration is advised, but only after having switched-on the meter for at least 30min for warming-up.
At the top of the control-unit are located 4 trimming-potentiometers, to calibrate at the corresponding 4 fields on the test-card.


Transmissive Metering

The lightbox should yíeld even distribution of light and the metering should take place at the same Position on the lightbox.
By means of a calibrated step-wedge the meter can be calibrated for the zer-density as well for densdities in the 2-3 range, similar as stated for the reflective metering.

By pressing the metering-button at the metering-unit the zero-position is activated. Depending on method a clear part of the film, or the lightbox itself is metered.
The results will be stored for 2min. It is important to first release the metering button after the zero-position and only then to lift-up the metering-unit and position it on the actual position to be metered.

The meter is capable of transmissive and reflective metering on both b&w and colour templates.
For metering up to D 3.5 a lightbox yielding 1500Lux is sufficient, for densities up to 4.5 a box yielding 2500Lux is needed.
For metering above D 3.5 it5 may need some time for the display to come at rest.

steve,the D103 measures both reflection and transmission density but you need a lightsourse such as a light table that you tar to '0' once to measure transmission densities. works ell though once you've done that. I liked that it could measure reflection densities even on very large prints because of the long cable it came with.I did all my early Zone System calibration work with it;never let me down and the repeatability was very good as ell.

My original manual says "When carrying out the measurements, it is important to release the key only after the zero adjustment and then to lift the measuring head for putting it on the point to be measured." Do you know how the metering unit looks like ?
