I'm crazy

I get that message from others quite frequently due to my holding on to “the old ways.”

”You shoot film? That’s crazy! Where do you even get it?”
”You develop film? That’s crazy! How/why does one even do that these days?”
”You listen to vinyl? That’s crazy! Why aren’t you streaming?”
”Your car has an 8-track player that you use? That’s crazy!”
”You just go out and run in the dead cold of winter? That’s crazy! Why aren’t you at a gym?”
“You are still running Windows XP? That’s crazy! How can you even do anything with that?”

And until just 8 years ago: “You don’t have a cell phone? That’s crazy! How does anyone even contact you?”

OK, so I might appear to be a Luddite but I recently jump to the other end of the spectrum and bought a ‘24 Tesla Model Y. Now I am still getting the “crazy” messages:

”What happens when it’s cold?”
”What happens when the battery wears out?”
”Don’t they catch on fire?”
”I heard that they explode if immersed in water.”
”You greenies should get the h%$# out of Montana.”
and the list goes one and on.

I’m OK with being crazy. Cue up Paul Simon’s “Still Crazy After All These Years.”

I had no problem getting the Jobo spools in Lancashire , he's less than an hours drive from me !

If he does a search on ebay for the Jobo 1502 or DuoSet 1502 ( same thing ) and then save the search and tick the box for email notifications , as soon as one comes up , he'll get an email .
That's what I do when I'm after anything .

I've a few things I get the notifications on , but each time it's the same ridiculously priced listing that will never sell .
Sooner or later one will come up at the right price , and I'll get an email fairly quickly .

The OP could do two searches , one for UK listings only , and one for Europe , prices from Europe aren't too bad , especially if the total value is below the VAT threshold .
Buying from the US is a non starter though .
There's one listed now for £41 and another £25 just for postage . That's a lot for a jiffy bag !
Add 20% VAT and about £16 handling and your up to almost £100 !
4 x more than I'd pay .

The one I have in front of me to make sure I gave the correct part number still has the shops price sticker on it .
It was from Royston Photographic , priced at £12.15 .
Presumably on old sticker from a long gone shop , but I didn't pay much more than that myself for it .

Cross the border into Lancashire? OK I live about 5 miles from Colne 🙂. I have noticed that a Jobo reels might be the easiest to pick up and if they work in a Paterson or AP tank no problem. I appreciate 110 is not the best and really it is only because I acquired some 110 cameras, and then saw Orca film for sale and bought three that I decided to have a go. Cutting a spool down was my first thought but I think I will have to remove the ratch mechanism. I have a few spare (it was as cheap to buy 6 as buy 2) and might still have a go. I only have two films left having processed the first by sticking one end of the spiral column and just leaving it loose. I reckoned, correctly that it would open up to let developer in. It was just that in the past some tank spirals were adjustable beyond 35, 127 and 120 so I thought I would ask.

Of course a number of years ago iI did have a genuine 16mm tank, which I never used and sold, for a good price at the time on eBay never thinking 110 monochrome would ever appear again. Back in the day I think only Verichrome Pan ever appeared.

thanks for all suggestions and comments.

Colne ? You must have crept over the border, your user profile has you down as Keighley !

I bought a second hand gearbox from there years ago for my 1985 VW campervan and came back over the tops towards Hendon Bridge on the way back to Manchester .
It started off sunny , but by the time I got up their it was pelting it down and I was dodging lightning bolts !
I had planned on taking the dog a walk .
I guess someone wasn't happy about me crossing the border ! :surprised:

Check out #21 by Bob .
The one he suggested has an adjustable spool where you move one half of the spool up or down and lock it on position with a spring loaded catch .
Job done .
Assuming it's got the correct spool inside it ( the listing doesn't show , so get the seller to show you a picture of it )
Then you can buy the whole thing for £16.49 , which is less than you'll pay for a Jobo spool that I suggested .

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/33502529...-gdd1HhSPK&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

That would be the easiest option .

If you use a few films and find 110 / 16mm isn't for you , you can sell everything on again and you won't lose out .

EDIT ; IIRC the spools on the Jobo and Paterson / AP have different sized holes in them , so the spindles aren't interchangable .
I can check with my gear later if you want me to check compatibility.
Let me know .
But unless you already have the spool , I'd definitely recommend you get one of the ones Bobuk suggests .

There is a 16mm JOBO spool on eBay for £20 .
It's a different model number than mine , so might be for a different tank size .

Well I thought I might might as well have a go at converting a spiral myself. Even put a question on AI! on how to do it. Naturally came back with the obvious, cut down the column of an existing Spiral. This I did with a Paterson unit reducing the outer height to 12mm. Took care to cut evenly around. Well it works. Once cut the piece cut off can be used a spacer above and the best thing is fix it all in place. What I had forgotten is that the spiral plate on the inner column rotates separately. So the ratchet mechanism still works. I used a rubberised filler glue stuff called Sugru but I think there are similar products on the market. Happen to have a red pack.

So the two parts before cutting the one on the right down to 12mm.

Below after cutting and assembling. Dud 110 16mm film went straight in. So now I can use my last two Orca 100 110 films.
