The world of Licened trademerks gets even more wild.

I'm not sure if you did that on purpose, but my favorite bewildering lens trademarks are from Wild (pron. "vild"). The first time I ran into it in my copy of Kingslake I thought I must be misreading the figure caption. ("A wild Aviogon appears!")

Actually in German "Wild" has the same meaning...
Wild once, together with competitor Zeiss Oberkochen, dominated the western market for aerial surveying cameras.

You mean Wild Heerbrugg from Switzerland? They made the best stereo loupes/microscopes in the world.

We FD users can use a M42- or a Nikon-adapter.

I don't care Adrian, Meyer Optik were never in the first rank of World lens manufacturers German or not, my Canon 85 mm FD lens is superb, and I have no desire for one of these.

From a discussion on a german forum I learned that there is the Chance that the lenses are basically barrel modifications of current productions of

-) Helios 40 F1.5 85 from KMZ

-) a lens from Zhong Yi Optics, that also is sold as Mitakon F2 85mm

In germany the legal situation around the designation "Made in Germany" is very vague.
Products with only the last steps in production done in Germany are currently tolerated.

Meanwhile on their website:

Quality mde in Germany
We obtain the components in Germany and globally at fair conditions. Thus we can offer best technics at appropriate Prices. Meyer Görlitz lenses are assembled in Germany, but more important they are tested, measured and calibrated. So each lens earns itself the branding and the promise of Quality "Made in Germany" after having passed hrsh tests. Each lens leaves our workshop with individual test certifucate andf a 5-years warranty.

Not in my household Adrian, my Canon FD 85mm f1.2 L lens I bought new 24 years ago will beat the hell out of this optic.

I would go further and suggest that is one of the finest lenses ever produced.

It's the only lens I've actually used, that makes my Nikkor 85 f1.4 look shabby, performance wise and looks wise.

I think the sun shines out of my Nikkor 85 f1.4, but when shooting alongside that lens, only moon shine comes out! :D

When I( bought this lens new Mick even with my staff discount of cost plus V.A.T. it cost almost a months pay,but because I'm primarily a portrait photographer I've never regretted it.

The superb 85/1.4 Zeiss is made by Cosina anyway; so the same lens or something similar could hypothetically be private-label rebranded under some other name. There is quite a selection of fast 85's on the market right now. But my favorite lens on the Nikon is still the ole 85/1.4 Ais Manual . ... a hard act to follow.

They introduced another two lenses, this time with F 0.09 apertures.

Both lack mounts suitable for film cameras. Strong similarities with Mitakon lenses are hinted at.

As hinted at in preceeding posts this new company seems only into re-branding foreign made lenses and selling them at higher price under a german label and vage hints at their special quality.

In the beginning they were able to evoke the impression that they would re-start the Meyer-factory.

http://www.meyer-optik-goerlitz.de/de/nocturnus-f095-50mm/

It's F/0.95, but there's something strange here. It says it's for the APS-C format but the angle of view is specified as 45°, which is not consistent with a 50mm lens on an APS-C sensor. It says it's for the Sony E mount.

Perhaps the lens is not really a 50mm lens but a 25-30mm lens?

And making a 45 degree f/0.95 lens for the mirrorless APS-C isn't really a great optical achievement btw. It's more or less like making a 50mm f1.4 lens for 35mm full frame and then adding a focal reducer at the back. Any decent 50/1.4 full frame lens is converted into a f1.0 lens on a APS-C camera if you use the "Metabones speed booster" or similar focal reducers.

As for the 85/1.5 lens they sell:
http://www.meyer-optik-goerlitz.de/de/somnium-f15-85mm/

looks identical to the famous russian Helios 85/1.5. So there's a 99% chance they are buying the lens from russia and rebadging it, then selling it at the ridiculously high price of 999 EURO... For 999 euro you can buy about two Canon EF 85/1.8 lenses which are far, far, far, far beyond advanced regarding image quality and convenience.

It seems the longer one looks at that "manufacturer" and their products the more questions arise...

I think the longer i look at that webpage, the more ANSWERS arise... They are clearly a rebranding company.

Behold, how low the once mighty German camera optics industry has fallen... How the mighty have fallen!! And all due to Voigtlander/Zeiss-Ikon ignoring the japanese threat and releasing like 5 different cameras with 5 different lens mounts at one point in time!!

The Canon FD 85mm f1.2L Adrian will put one of these lenses to shame and although they are still expensive second hand they are fantastic.

That's a Helios / Cyclop if I ever did see one.
raffaele-horstmann1.jpg

And this is what my Cyclop (Helios without aperture) does to Pan F:

Even if we give them the complete benefit of the doubt, and it is a completely new design and not rebadged, still why would I but the Somnium for €1000 when a Helios, EF 85/1.8, Sigma or Samyang 85/1.4 are all half that, and a Cyclop even less than half that again?
