Harry , I have printed from her original negatives and I cannot agree more, she was very decisive about each image and from the work I have seen never bracketed but moved from image to image.Vivian Maier did with two shots or less what others would need two rolls to manage.....She was everything I love about photography. My favorite street photographer ever and her French landscape work was excellent.
Male or female photographs I tend not to include those that have access to famous people, kinda easier getting noticed when you have a roll filled with Beatles pictures.
That is very interesting! So far here I have not even heard photographers speaking about her. Neither did I see a street photographer in the last years. We have noticed an upsurge in interest in street photography due to the three shows of Vivian's work here in Toronto.
Weird...
How could have Vivian Maier become one of the most influential ones, with her work to be known only since about 6 years?
A short time to be of influence and this influence to be recognized.
Such listings remind me of those "10 best lenses" lists... Also such list insinuates that photographers have been socialized the same way.
good question, I was also going to mention Mary Ellen Mark. Why is Dorothea Lange missing from this list?
Vivian Maier did with two shots or less what others would need two rolls to manage.....She was everything I love about photography. My favorite street photographer ever ...
There are far more than 20 influential women photographers in my opinion. As such this type of list will always be missing someone. But the article was still very enjoyable.
And Ms. Maier should certainly be on a list of this type, whether Maloof discovered her photographs or not.
Yes, I agree that she should be on the list...but We wouldn't know about her if it wasn't for Maloof. No Maloof, no Maier.
I completely agree with this. It is refreshing to see the perspective of someone who seems to have much more exposure to Russian photographers. There are certainly photographers on this list that we normally see, but there are many that I don't ever remember seeing on any list. Even google searches seem to turn up very little on some of these artists. This is really interesting list and it introduced me to a number of photographers with whom I had not been familiar...
Its really great to hear from the outer ridges every once and awhile, it keeps us big city folks grounded. This is really interesting list and it introduced me to a number of photographers with whom I had not been familiar.
I agree that putting Vivian Maier on this list is a bit premature despite the fact that I love her photographs. But really, if this is supposed to be a list about influence, then her work is still pretty fresh in the great scheme of things to have had a big impact on photography, notwithstanding the reported crowds of street photographers in Toronto! Torontonians tend to think that anything that happens in that city must have a huge impact on the world so we must take that with a grain of salt.
Surely Julia Margaret Cameron had a far greater impact on photography. But this is minor point. I enjoyed the list. Much thanks to the OP.
He discovered nothing he just bought a a box of negatives and sold them on line and they where noticed by others who realized the importance of the work......Oh brother... He deserves credit for discovering her work.
