Thats a nice list... Rita Leistner would be one I would add to that list who is very much active today.

Weird...
How could have Vivian Maier become one of the most influential ones, with her work to be known only since about 6 years?
A short time to be of influence and this influence to be recognized.

Such listings remind me of those "10 best lenses" lists... Also such list insinuates that photographers have been socialized the same way.

We have noticed an upsurge in interest in street photography due to the three shows of Vivian's work here in Toronto. I think many young photographers look at her persistence and
dedication to taking photographs over a 40 year period working as a nanny and understand that great photography comes in many forms .

The ability to afford fancy expensive equipment does not necessarily equate to serious work, we see that daily here on the media pages.
This list contains at least 5 of my favourite photographers of all time.

Vivian Maier did with two shots or less what others would need two rolls to manage.....She was everything I love about photography. My favorite street photographer ever and her French landscape work was excellent.

Male or female photographs I tend not to include those that have access to famous people, kinda easier getting noticed when you have a roll filled with Beatles pictures.

Harry , I have printed from her original negatives and I cannot agree more, she was very decisive about each image and from the work I have seen never bracketed but moved from image to image.

That is very interesting! So far here I have not even heard photographers speaking about her. Neither did I see a street photographer in the last years.

well you may be visiting very narrow streets.

Vivian is all the rage in Canada.

Also a German Art Collective just bought the whole Goldstein/ Bulger collection, and the neg's now reside in you neck of the woods.

Hitler become even more influential at shorter time.

Actually, Vivian become influential not within six years, but instantly, after guy who find her negatives shared them on FB.
She mastered her photography for many decades, without interruptions to get connections and get paid. Talented person, who has mastered her vision without photography as business creativity obstruction.

Why is Dorothea Lange missing from this list?

Yes, you would think her name would be there, and Vivian Maier would be missing... not that I'm not happy that Vivian is on the list. She wouldn't be though, if it hadn't been for that guy who bought all her negatives...

I feel the same way. Also, I feel sad that she never would come to know how good her work was and how many people appreciate her.

In addition to Lange, Cameron and Mark, I feel that Cindy Sherman should be on this list somewhere.

There are far more than 20 influential women photographers in my opinion. As such this type of list will always be missing someone. But the article was still very enjoyable.

And Ms. Maier should certainly be on a list of this type, whether Maloof discovered her photographs or not.

Yes, I agree that she should be on the list...but We wouldn't know about her if it wasn't for Maloof. No Maloof, no Maier.

if her parents never had sex and conceived her then we wouldn't know about her or probably J.Maloof for that matter, the entire argument is nonsensical and endless, the possibilities of turns, twist and outcomes and "if" for any human beings life is endless, personally I think Maloof get far to much credit in the Maier story and when I see him put his name on her work in his film my guts turned..............Sorry but that's how I feel.

This is really interesting list and it introduced me to a number of photographers with whom I had not been familiar.

I agree that putting Vivian Maier on this list is a bit premature despite the fact that I love her photographs. But really, if this is supposed to be a list about influence, then her work is still pretty fresh in the great scheme of things to have had a big impact on photography, notwithstanding the reported crowds of street photographers in Toronto! Torontonians tend to think that anything that happens in that city must have a huge impact on the world so we must take that with a grain of salt.

Surely Julia Margaret Cameron had a far greater impact on photography. But this is minor point. I enjoyed the list. Much thanks to the OP.

I completely agree with this. It is refreshing to see the perspective of someone who seems to have much more exposure to Russian photographers. There are certainly photographers on this list that we normally see, but there are many that I don't ever remember seeing on any list. Even google searches seem to turn up very little on some of these artists.

I would love to see some more of their photographs.

Its really great to hear from the outer ridges every once and awhile, it keeps us big city folks grounded.

Glad yet surprised Astrid is there.
