By that I meant: some photographs work for obvious reasons. And some photographs work for reasons that are not obvious at all.
There is some subject matter that will reproducibly elicit a certain and well-conditioned emotional reaction from the viewer. No, I am not referring only to porn :p...
Surely you don't deny that a complete abstract can have emotional impact?
But ultimately John is right of course, and what is great to the goose may not be so great to the gander. (and no I do not mean to imply anything gender specific with that comment!)
I guess my first recollection of...
Not quite sure how we got onto the subject of tabletop neutron sources, but if it were me, I make up a little H2 plasma bottle, strip off electrons to get protons, accelerate the protons across whatever potential I choose, and then slam them into paraffin. Neutrons aplenty. Looking at that...
You make it sound like they are mutually exclusive... or emotional impact versus originality. Yet if we actually start naming great photographs, they will most assuredly have both components in comparable doses.
I'd say that originality and emotional impact are both requirements of a great...
Robert, have you done any lifts yet? Just throw the fp100c in boiling water. If you do lifts, you will discover that you probably *want* the print to look a bit dark to the eye, and then when you lift it off it'll be about right.
I also haven't seen that. Are you sure that development was complete, and did you place the print in sunlight or something?
Incidentally, if you are adventurous, you can dremel out the edges of the polaroid back and get a slightly larger image.
I was also looking for some trays and concluded that a stainless food-service bain marie tray may be a good option:

I just picked up some food-service...
It was along those lines that I was thinking, Eddie. I think that's why originality/uniqueness is so often seen in great images. Something that is original and unique will stand out from the pack.... perhaps the most basic requirement of greatness. What great most assuredly is not, is common...
But Chris! I routinely get exactly the results that I want, including convincing blacks, by exposing at box speed or a small (half stop or so) tick slower if I want more defined primary colours.
Moreover, I think it is in the film-makers' best interest to make it as easy as possible for...
I think that a basic ingredient of every great image is originality.
Some of the greatest images seem inspired by totally new thinking and experience. As if an idea just formed out of nothing and an image appeared... because somebody needed to express it.
But there is also a role for...
MF slide projector???
Does anybody have a medium format slide projector to bring along? We will be having a 35mm slide evening and I thought it'd be nice to show some medium format stuff, and loupe some LF slides on a light table as well.
Frankly, the error in this exposure was rather large. A 1 stop bracket around not-so-sunny 11 (or maybe 8, hard to judge without being there) would have probably nailed the shot. I suspect some big source of error.
If your best exposure is near the middle of your bracket then you're getting...
My last magnolia slide for now, I swear!
Actually, I am relieved that these things are out of bloom now, their noxious scent was killing me.
Anyway, this is a test of 4x10 slide. The local lab actually can't do 4x10, so I stapled the slide to an 8x10 piece with a cutout window and they...
That shot looks a good stop or two overexposed. I'd guess that there is a systematic exposure issue.. ISO setting, shutter speed, something. I have a polaroid back for my 645 and that's a handy way to test.
About your metering questions, I find just about any dslr with histograms to be an...
Cold fusion per Pons and Fleischman is going nowhere. It is a standard joke at any physics conference that I attend; why the chemists decided to give it more press this year is beyond me. I wish them lots of luck with that.
The real cold fusion is muon catalyzed and is quite well known in the...
Rate the paper at ISO 3 or so unless you're preflashing. For most papers.
You will be developing by inspection with a safelight, so, you can work out the dev time that way. You can use an orange or red safelight with most papers... just not with that direct positive stuff or hyper seagull...
