Help with printing an uneven negative

I am surprised that some of my colleagues are throwing in the towel so easily ;) Nicholas is probably right, it may be fine even as is. I'd make myself a simple dodge tool (=rough cut paper straight edge) and keep it moving about that boundary. Looks like one portion needs ~0.5-1 stops or...

    What "makes" a "great" image?

Let me attempt a different strategy in defining a great photograph... by trying to define the task of the photographer. Fundamentally, I think that a photographer seeks to develop unique insight into the subject. That is what most distinguishes a photographer from someone who is merely...

First Annual Spring Workshop in Virginia

Without going into much detail online, let me just say that the organization that runs Swannanoa is very difficult to contact and we're doing our best. As of now, we know that we have Friday for sure, and I am going to try to get Thursday. I don't think we can get Wednesday there though.

Fine Art Prints: Glossy or Matte?

It may be blazingly obvious, but consider how you plan to present your work before the customer. Under glass or not? Will people be looking at something hanging on a wall, or will they be handling the raw prints or matted prints? My own feeling is that nothing beats a fiber matte print in the...

Tom, there isn't an official beginning per se... I'll probably be out and about on Wednesday too. Folks are welcome to come Wed and stay through the weekend or whatever- I'll be doing all manner of stuff, as will Richard. The weather has been dull and that may well continue, so we'll just...

Is there an 8x10 field camera with no movements?

I have an 8x10 poco, it dates to about 1903 and has very limited movements... actually, it only has the shift and tilt necessary to fold the thing up. It folds up into a nondescript and lightweight box with a double-convertible lens inside. I think I paid ~$150 for it.

    Filters Drive Me Crazy

Hi Ralph, it's a typical silicon photodiode response. The CdS cells have less IR response but are nevertheless peaked in the red, as I recall.

What film? How to achieve rich grey tones?

fp4+, hp5+, tri-x, foma... And I do wish people would stop attempting to make every thread about their own little niche of knowledge and opinion, frankly that's why I gave up on RFF entirely: the bullshit to fact ratio was excessive. This was a very simple question about tonality. Give the...

    Filters Drive Me Crazy

To do this right, with full confidence, you'd have to take into account the sensitivity spectrum of the meter, the transmission spectrum of the hot mirror over the meter's cell, the transmission spectrum of the filter, the sensitivity spectrum of the film, and finally... the spectrum of the...

Chamonix 45n bellows not infrared proof?

Some plastics are transparent in the IR, maybe also down into the near-IR. I don't have my horseman any more but I recall that the bellows were not leather, they were some sort of thin (almost papery) synthetic material. Of course, the sensitivity of IR films currently on the market is...

Yep sometimes I just spot meter through the filter, comparing values with and without the filter for a reality check. Not that the discrepancy can vary depending on whether you're aimed at the sky or a neutral grey object or your foot or....

What film? How to achieve rich grey tones?

    1) Try fp4+ and tri-x. My own favourite of the 'oldies' is panatomic x, which I have in fair quantity but it is now discontinued (except in extended red versions that come in aerial recon sizes) and has become quite rare. Anyway, for starters, you might check out the foma stuff on freestyle...

    Filters Drive Me Crazy

A filter factor is just a rough recommendation based on some assumptions about colour temp of the dominant light source and a typical film's spectral sensitivity. If you can meter TTL then by all means do it. But even that is no guarantee: ultimately, you have to convolve the meter reading...

I understand where 2F and John are coming from ;) Marko recall that I advised you to get an F100 ;) That advice still stands. An ex-F5er myself, I simply question whether the F5 is the right piece for you (based on what I have seen of your work). The F5 is a machine gun and you are a natural...

Wein = 'vayn' and Wien = 'veen' but... almost all english speakers I know call them both 'ween'... e.g. they pronounce Weiner 'weener'... ach du meine Güte
