When I first joined APUG Photrio I too was looking to set up a darkroom. I was encouraged to look at local ads such as Craig's List. I got lucky and found a photo lab sell off its enlargers and print dryers on Craig's. I later came across ads here in the Classified. Good luck and do not give up.
When I finished graduate school, I had finally brought the latest Minolta slr and several lenses. I was only shooting slides and had no plans or ways to get into a darkroom. The people I worked with set up a week in Yosemite class taught by Ansel Adams. Well I knew that N+1, N+2, N-1, ...
I have almost never used either the aperture priority or shutter priority per se, I almost always choose the f/stop and shutter speed myself. So my my Nikons might just as well be manual and of course the Hasselblad is neither aperture or shutter priority, I choose the f/stop and shutter speed...
I use only the light metering portion of the Zone System to bring out selected shadows. I have never used the expansion or compression for film development since I do not need it with modern films.
When I am just traveling and not concentrating on taking photographs I use my Nikon N75, similar to the N65, for taking color negatives and the F100 for black & white.
Take what you and use from the Zone System and leave the rest. Need expansion and compression? No, not needed with modern films, so move on. Getting more details in shadow areas selectively? Use a spot meter and put the shadow detail you want in the Zone you wish and the rest falls into...
Since COVID started up I have not traveled much, just Yosemite, New Orleans and Yellowstone April May 2020 and stayed put since. Other than visiting relatives. So I am not taking enough color photographs to need to get back in the darkroom. I just send it off to Samy's when I finish a roll...
Most modern scanners should get you what you want as long as it can handle the format sizes which you use. Once scanned then the work starts with the software. Again, I do film so my needs are simple, scan, reduce, crop, align, send, post. No great shakes.
Composition was easy for me to learn. Every weekend whether we needed to or not my parents would drag us through art galleries in the Baltimore Washington DC area. After you see enough art, you can almost automatically see compositions yourself.
OR recommended by my supervisor at Kodak:
Art...
There are enough challenges in life. I want my photographs to come out well no matter how crappy the composition may be. Then I can enjoy them as they are and not be bummed that because of out dated film, I lost the only opportunity to take that photograph. My photographs are good enough to...
Visualization or previsualization are the same for me. It is what I am considering when I am contemplating the composition before I take the photograph. I really do not care what you call it as long as I am working my way to take the photograph.
Some people lost the ability to able to disagree and not be disagreeable. And some of those are unable to stay in the same room and be civil to anyone. Please stay with us. The rest of us are worth staying for.
And that summarizes my complaint about books and article written about Vivian Maier. I started this thread to see her work, but more importantly to see what people think about her work after they flushed to books and articles down the toilet.
Not a big fan of halation. On rare instance I my see a use for it, but I am not going to buy up a load of film and to only use it once or twice in a decade.
