Also, is the BetterScanning holder correct side up in the configuration used by @corposant ? Those "feet" on the top look suspiciously like height adjusters.
I'm not sure, because it has been over a decade since I used something from BetterScanning, and that was with a very different scanner.
Even though you are using the betterscanning holder, you have placed it too far up and it is covering up the "calibration notch" of light that you should see at the top of the scanner glass.
Taken last month - I rescanned since having acquired a BetterScanning film holder and began a different workflow with SilverFast.

Thank you George,
Regarding cleaning: I have been doing pretty much the same thing (orange anti-static cloth, antistatic brush, rocket blower) except I have not used any PEC-12 fluid in the process. Typically I have scanned within a few days after developing so I have not thought I needed a...
...not be getting the best scan sharpness. The film holders are inconsistent and kind of tinkertoy. I could not make contact with the BetterScanning guy (he still doesn’t list the 850 on his site), so I contacted another anr glass guy whose site is Scan-Tech, who sells glass and will talk to...
My V850 film holders have 5 positions for focus which works well. The lens is factory calibrated to focus on the 3mm default setting on the film holders. I did find one holder that worked better one notch setting off that. There is also glass to hold the film flat. But that adds to dust...
...difference(with some trial and error to get it right) but it's still less than great as there are only 3 adjustment positions.
The BetterScanning holder not only gave me better film flatness, but by using grub screws for feet that can be adjusted a fraction of a turn at a time, you can...
...also possible that best place to be is right on the glass and wet scanning maybe th actual best way to get the most.
Something like Betterscanning holders have been shown to get the most due to neat height adjusters built in, and AN glass helps keep film flat.
Another way is to get a piece...
If you search on this forum for 'betterscanning' you'll see lots of discussions involving a lack of responsiveness.

...people who have had no success obtaining any response to attempts to contact betterscanninn.com or Doug Fisher - the person behind the Betterscanning business. I don't think I've seen any indication that anyone has had success reaching him in years.
He was good to deal with when I dealt with...
...like this seems to be the closest option I can find for what I'm looking for, but the smaller size of the opening would prevent me from installing larger custom "masks" like in the betterscanning method.
Has anyone purchased or is aware of any epson 8x10 ANR setups that might be comparable?
...the game has moved on. And it's DSLR or mirrorless cameras that have taken the high ground for 'scanning' negatives. It's a shame for Betterscanning, but businesses and niche enterprises come and go in a technology war.
On the other hand their are now many companies making negative holders...
Obviously. The Epson holders are poorly designed (especially the 120 and 4x5 holders) and I’ve been looking for a better replacement without success for some time now.
I've used the Epson with a Betterscanning holder that not only uses ANR glass to keep negatives flat but also offers micro adjustment for height far better than fiddling around with the 'work or not work' feet of the Epson holders. And I can still say that an Epson V700 > V850 are rubbish at...
What I'm wondering is how hard would it really be to replace defunct Betterscanning products with some small levelers added to an Epson compatible holder, put some ANR glass in it and wet mount the negative to the bottom as appears to be the "best quality" approach to running our V850's?
Betterscanning has ideas for generic products that work. The brand names might be different, but I expect you can find the fluid (it's just mineral spirits).

...make the problem stand out.
Not a s*****r calibration issue : I repeated after swapping the strip from one to the other slot of the Betterscanning holder; defect unchanged. Turned the 3-frame strip head-tail: unchanged.
A long shot at a possible explanation. My agitation routine: every...
Hi! If anyone has an old two strip ANR glass holder for the 4990 from BetterScanning, please hit me up! I have a one strip holder, but I'd much much rather scan half a roll at a time.

I still have the Betterscanning 120 holder for the V600. But I don't use it because I've upgraded to a V850. What would the holder be worth on the secondary market?
It seems that as of Aug. 10. He still is. Not sure of the why's and the whats going on with being so hard to get a hold of. I had thought it was health related, but don't know for sure.
I hope Betterscanning is still in business. I have its film holders for 120 for my Epson V700. With some fiddling the BS holders give corner to corner sharpness, far better than the Epson's orginal holders.
