I still have the Betterscanning 120 holder for the V600. But I don't use it because I've upgraded to a V850. What would the holder be worth on the secondary market?

ICE is typically a combination of hardware/software feature, and the hardware ICE does not work with B&W film since it uses IR. So if Nikon V works with B&W dust removal, then it's probably just a property of whatever software you are using, and has nothing to do with the hardware scanner per se

For clarity.... The V600 is a current scanner (for sale on Epson's website, also Dell, also Amazon). The V7xx has been replaced by the V8xx, replacing the CFL lighting with LED.

All three models (and the V500/550) have an infrared scanning channel which is utilized by the scanning software to detect and map out dust and scratches.

Under Silverfast, this is called iSRD, and in EpsonScan is called Digital ICE. If your film has silver content, or is fantastically dense (Kodachrome), then you need to use what Silverfast calls SRDx and Epson calls "Dust Removal", which is a software-only solution that attempts to detect and repair anomalies.

Regardless, ICE is not just hardware. There has to be a software component to reconstruct the blocked portion of the negative, even in the Coolscan.

ICE is not hardware at all. It is patented software that uses various hardware when that hardware has contracted (paid for) with whoever it is that owns the patents today.

I doubt new V600 is actually deliverable, though it is listed "for sale" with Epson, Dell, and inevitably Amazon.

Wouldn't be the first time I'm wrong.

But in any case, who would buy a new V600 except from Epson's refurbs?

Hi, I am new. I was just tinkering with the old man's Retina A1, passed on to me, but never used it.
So I thought to turn the knob just in case there was still some film in it. There was.

How long do those keep?

depends on a lot of things. But I've processed film that had been in an attic for 20 years and got usable images. Not the best quality mind you, but I knew that going in.

Give it a try and see what you can get.

Thanks, adeyoujo

I went right to it, but it was empty. So that turned out to be a little less exhilarating than I had hoped.

I'd be interested in that holder if you're considering selling it, do you know if it will take a 6 x 24 negative?

I think I'll hold onto it for now. Sorry. Don't know if it handles 6x24 negative.

It looks like he was over there as late as last month...

As an established customer of his that has purchased from him in the past, I tried to be a repeat customer in the past year.

Doug didn't return any emails nor did he fulfill two orders I placed with him.

There's nothing more frustrating to me than to have to work hard to try to purchase something and be completely ignored.

I don't give a flying F what else may be going on in his life or if he's not getting rich from it. If you have a freaking business that's in the public eye and is taking orders, then treat it as such.

F him.

That is the size of it. I have very low expectations for the performance of others, and yet they still manage to disappoint. It isn't getting better as I get older.

I totally agree.

It just doesn't make sense to me that someone would keep a website up and running, and even occasionally make updates to it, all the while while NOT answering emails or fulfilling orders. It's doing extra work with no reward.

The sad thing is he makes such a great product - I'm super happy with the 120 holder/glass I purchased originally from him.

My photography print sales are a side job for me, but you can be damn well certain that if someone emails me and wants to give me money, I will make the time to at least give them the freakin' courtesy of a response. Hell, even if its just a question about something where I'm not getting any money, I still reply in some sort of respectable time.

The best thing we can do is post about our experiences like this in the hope that we can warn people off and save them the same grief. Seriously, I agree w/ every word Jeremy said, and thank you for putting it in plain English. Some (many) of these people think they rule the earth.

In the end, rudeness and unprofessional conduct is just that. I'm a Southerner, and one of the most peaceful souls you will ever meet. But we are brought up from the get go to get in people's faces when this happens. Let them know it isn't gonna fly. Whether or not it does any good is besides the point, that's our job to let them know in no uncertain terms that if it happens again, there will be consequences. Cause and effect, that's how the universe works no matter where you are or who you are.
