One can start with 35mm, but more will be in focus than 120 or 4"x5". 4"x5" will be more expensive, but based on my experience be more rewarding sooner.

I have as expected found that expanding to digital photograph will cost me about $1100US before taxes to up grade a 13 year old MAC to a 60 processor Mac Pro Tower with full memory and added drives. Film and other costs are a whole lot less.
One is limited by the size of available print material, limits on equipment size such as tank or tray, illumination by an enlarger, enlarger optics, and quality of the end product's appeal. On the other hand there are more mundane limits including taste and appeal.
