DIY repairs depend on the problem, parts available, appropriate tools and your skills. I no longer do more than minor repairs and would rather keep the existing repair people in business.

I had a circa 1933 Certo SuperDolly folding camera with a very sharp, high quality Zeiss f/3.5 lens, 645 and 6x6 folding camera. I was missing the 645 film cover plate, but the modern 645 120 film numbers did not line up with the numbers.

I have used Samy's Camera on Fairfax in Los Angeles California since 2007. I used KEH once for a CLA and stuck shutter under warranty for a 500 mm C lens which required a complete disassembly and re-collimation. That would have been on $750 at Hasselblad NJ back then for a $550 lens purchase.

SLRs are larger than range finders because the lens needs to be further from the film plane to avoid the mirror impacting the back of the lens. Furthermore the prism and mirror assembly adds to the weight.
