Check that the auto operation works fine. Sometimes you can see a slow speed like 1/8th in your viewfinder yet the machine will fire fast (say, 1/250). This is a common failure mode. Until it gets repaired, it sometimes can be prevented by waiting some seconds with the shutter half-pressed...

I don't use AF or AF-D lenses because the manual focus lenses are much better built. And sometimes they are optically better (i.e. 35/2 AFD versus the manual focus version, 28/2.8 versus the previous manual focus version, etc). I don't care for matrix metering. To each its own, though.
