Would you buy a Nikon FM2n in 2020?

Yes, it is a superb lens. I had the Nikkor-O for some years and now I have the first AI version, which seems similar. For Canon i have the original (radioactive, concave front, chrome nose) FD 35/2.0 which is a collector's favorite and gets accolades from everybody and is dead sharp even wide...

I understand your concern. I have the original M42 to FD adapter by Canon, it works wonderfully and of course keeps infinity focus. It's a nice way to use M42 lenses. I love my Takumars of course, as well as my Carl Zeiss Jena M42 lenes (20, 35 and 135mm) Well, M42 was such a mount. And you...

How Many Cameras do you Own?

This was the year of the duds for me... One or two Nikon FM that didn't work, a Nikon FG with everything working except the meter, a Canon AT-1 whose inner tungsten wire broke after I dissasembled the camera for the 2nd time...

The Inside (Technical) Scoop on Lens Coating Durability

Bumping up this thread Jason. Very interesting info. I am very curious about the usage of two layer coatings in the 60s, besides Minolta's "achromatic" coating. I had a Canon lens FL 85-300/5.0 which was marketed in 1964, and looking at the glass reflections there were many colors which made me...

So, what did camera did you ask santa for . . .

I am almost embarrased to say this, but I had the chance to buy not one but two SR-2 cameras at an affordable price here. I didn't because I didn't find anything special about them. But i'm not a Minolta collector. Which advantage would a SR-2 have over, say, an SRT-102?

Well said. And even worse if the lab is using one of those Epson flatbeds like the V600 or V850. Truly throwing the accutance and definition down the drain. Even in medium format!! Once i had a nice 8x10 analog enlargement done from a 6x6 b&w negative. I went to the same lab to request a neg...

Great minds think alike. I think we make an excellent expedition team. Shall you bring a powered Nikon F? just in case the Yeti wakes up afterwards.

Check that the auto operation works fine. Sometimes you can see a slow speed like 1/8th in your viewfinder yet the machine will fire fast (say, 1/250). This is a common failure mode. Until it gets repaired, it sometimes can be prevented by waiting some seconds with the shutter half-pressed...

With medium format folders it is difficult to get a really sharp picture, compared to using a "proper" medium format SLR or TLR. I would suggest using a TLR or SLR instead. Benvenuto a Photrio!

What is the most rugged F and why?

I'm with you. I held the 250/5.6 lens, and i did not like the build quality. You could say it was built by Sigma or Samyang and somebody would believe you. Perhaps it wasn't built by Minolta (the other lenses were beter built, in particular the fisheye, really well built!) Yet the 250 fetches...

I have actually dissasembled and overhauled a Lomo Smena 8M and I can assure you, once it's working, there is little that can fail. The shutter doesn't use a slow speed governor (so it can't freeze on cold weather), it's a very simple shutter. Everything is very simple. The plastic case is very...

Only if you think about zooms, in which case you're correct. In fact the only AF-D lens I own is a zoom: The 35-80/4-5.6 AFD. I love that lens and I wished Canon had something similar in FD version. This is almost everything I want in a zoom lens: covers most used focal lengths, sharp...

Don't sleep over the keyboard. And, it appears you were dreaming and my name appeared. Sorry for tampering with your dreams. Did you dream of being in the Himalayas with a Lomo Smena 8M? Was I using a Canon F-1 there?

What is the most rugged F and why?

I wanted to get an XK for years and years, but i didn't find any in my city. At the end I think i'll never collect minoltas. With three systems (Canon, Nikon and Pentax) it's already a lot of lenses and cameras that i need to babysit. Nothing wrong with Minolta lenses of course, and in fact...

The Smena 8M is very reliable once you get it working first. There is very little to fail there. You realize that the FM2 and the FE2 have many many parts in common right? Yes, the FE2's electronics are not bulletproof, but at least they're more reliable than the FE. If my FE dies, i can use...

I don't use AF or AF-D lenses because the manual focus lenses are much better built. And sometimes they are optically better (i.e. 35/2 AFD versus the manual focus version, 28/2.8 versus the previous manual focus version, etc). I don't care for matrix metering. To each its own, though.

Those two cameras (Pentax MX and Honeywell H1) are better built than the FM2, by my own account and experience (having owned the FM2 and the MX at the same time, and having owned several Spotmatic variations). Is it that hard to admit that the FE/FM/FE2/FM2 line isn't as well built as the...

A Lomo Smena 8M would probably never fail on a himalayan trip either. Maybe never fail after 10 Himalayan trips. Yeah, it's reliable. It also has extremely cheap build quality, fit, and finish. I stand for what I wrote, as a Nikon fan. Never understood the glorification of the FM2. And again...

Would you buy a Nikon FM2n in 2020?

Compared to the F, F2, EL, EL2 and the Nikkormats, yes. Flimsy. The F3 is also better built. My hands don't lie, i had the FM2N, the F3, F2S, EL and Nikkormat FTN on my table. At least the FE2 gives a great auto mode and a wonderful match needle meter. The FM2 doesn't offer none of this. As...

    I scored a Nikon FE!

Congrats, I really like my FE even though I have the theoretically superior F2S and F3 cameras. The Series E 50/1.8 is a decent lens, and it should balance perfectly with the FE so ergonomically it's a good combination. Just make sure to clean the battery compartment as best as possible. And...

Well... Surprise surprise!! The EL2 and the FE use almost the same electronics . It's exaclty the same custom Nikon IC, and almost the same circuit. Source: - Nikon literature on nikon website and - My own inspection of both cameras.

Would you buy a Nikon FM2n in 2020?

These are the advantages: - FE meters with manual focus lenses, the F60, doesn't. - FE has a better viewfinder - FE allows you to easily manual focus a lens through the viewfinder - FE uses common LR44 batteries instead of the rather uncommon CR123A lithium of the F60.

Would you buy a Nikon FM2n in 2020?

Me too. Some months ago I got an almost mint FM2n for a very good price. I didn't like it. It had flimsy build quality (i'm accustomed to the F2, F3, EL and FTN) and an inferior viewfinder (to the F2 and F3). And it can't mount pre-AI lenses. I kept it for 2 weeks then sold it. What I kept is...

What is the most rugged F and why?

So far i've not seen, found, or read any report on the electronics failing. Which doesn't mean the complete camera is bulletproof; for example the meter movement tends to get stuck at the rest position (this is a common issue).

What is the most rugged F and why?

Sorry but the Canon New F-1 was released almost at the same time (1981) than the F3 and its electronics never fail. Year 1981 isn't "early electronics" at all. Yashica Electro 35 cameras were introduced in the late 1960s, withfully electronic operation (meter and shutter timing), and their...
