Les: BTW, great scans. I'm also looking at the Epson V850 which with Betterscanning aftermarket holders prices similarly to a Nikon Coolscan 8000 with glass holders.
...to be printed or scanned at high resolution.
The strips containing a negative to be printed are held flat in the Epson holder using Betterscanning ANR glass jammed down against the plastic posts with card to keep flat.
IMO Ilford film dries the flattest, the Betterscanning glass may not be...
...scanning at higher resolutions, I've found this to be a rather puzzling matter with my Epson 4990. First of all, I don't use the Betterscanning holders because I determined, based on my own empirical findings, that my scanner's optimum focal point is exactly the film height of my film...
...scanner related is that with a curled film, the edges (or at least 2 of them) should be sharp with softness in the center.
I use the betterscanning negative holder and am quite happy with it. It uses a single sheet of glass so there are only 2 additional surfaces to worry about. I generally...
brent 8927 I had not thought of the DOF of the optics in the scanner being sufficient to compensate for curl ans mentioned by (there was a url link here which no longer exists) above. Now I am thinking the lack of sharpness I am seeing is me.
I wish to keep it simple and try to get buy with...
...minimal curl.
I use the stock holders in the V700, as I find they work just as well as the aftermarket one. I have that one too, from betterscanning.com, and have two ANR glass inserts that can weigh down the film if needed. I just haven't noticed any benefit, but most others say they do see...
I agree, 2400 is too low for the Epson as long as you are using one of Doug's brilliant BetterScanning film holders, appropriately set up for your specific machine. As far as I can tell, the 2400 figure derives from a single review that used the stock holders - not best practice in my...

For sale is a BetterScanning Variable Height Mounting Station for wet and dry mounting on Epson scanners. I last used this some years ago with an Epson 4990 scanner. Using it improved the sharpness of my scans quite a bit. The holder has a small crack, and is glued in place. It was this way when...
...to find FH-869-GR glass holder with masks for all popular film size including 35mm, XPan, 6x6, 6x7, 6x9, etc. $450.
I also have Silverfast Ai V8 full license. This is a must if you scan negative C41 film. $400.
Get everything for $3150, plus shipping.
Also BetterScanning 617 scan holder, $100
Moving up to large format so the trusty Canon must make way.
Comes in full working order with all original film holders as well as a BetterScanning 120 holder with ANR glass valued @ $80
Its listed currently as Australia postage only but if you're international, get in touch and i'll work out a...
...and my Bessa II now.
Same too, regarding my Epson v750. After checking the detail on it, I found that I needed to adjust my Betterscanning-negative holder UP by almost 2.5mm(!), since I wasn't pulling out all the information from the negatives during scanning.
(yes, I also print in the...
That was a 35mm neg with normal glass over it to flatten it out, i have also used the betterscanning holder with a sheet of clear plastic sandwiching the film between it and the glass in the holder
...it brings to the table. I try and get a good base scan with all the detail I want, and then make tweaks in LR or PS. I do have a Betterscanning holder, but I only use it for 6x6 and 4x5. It's great though, and I highly recommend it. In any holder your negative needs to be FLAT, and at the...
...a really nice big fat tax refund, I might buy an Imacon. Until then, I'll have to investigate other solutions. Maybe there's a way to paint the BetterScanning holders with a matte finish paint that wouldn't reflect, or else bevel the edge with a Dremel so it doesn't reflect up into the negative.
@TheFlyingCamera I've got the Betterscanning/Newton glass as well. What I've read is that the black frame on the right, when you use the right side of the holder, reflects back to the negative when there is a bright sky. AFAIK there are several solutions. 1. Cover the right side of the negative...
@RudyMerz I too am using an Epson V750. I don't know if it has anything to do with my film holders or not - I'm using the Betterscanning holders because they do keep the film flatter when used with the anti-newton glass inserts, but it's still not perfect. I suspect it has to do with the slight...
...Remember there are two lenses that focus at two different heights so be sure to select the ideal one for your scanning process. But yea, you sometimes have to shim the holders to get proper height, and Betterscanning holders are much better than the Epsom ones for adjustment.
Good luck,

...for more scanning questions if you need further info, sorry about that folks, I forgot!

Look into the company "betterscanning" they make special film holders for scanners with ANR Glass placed on top of the film to keep it flat and much more adjustable holders then most that...
...all you need to do is flip the image left to right or up to down in photoshop later. There is really no other consequence to scanning with the emulsion the "wrong" way around.
Can't say enough good things about the betterscanning holder. It turned scanning from a nightmare to a pleasure...
When using the BetterScanning film holders, is the film sandwiched between two pieces of anti newton glass, or is it just one piece on the upper side of the film? If it's just on the top side, does it hold the film perfectly flat? I'm having trouble with curl, which is affecting my scan focus...
...two sides in the exposure, and is noticeable and almost impossible to fix when stitched.
One thing I'm looking into is getting the BetterScanning film holders. The supplied holders suck for 120, especially if is there is any curve in the film width-wise.
480sparky, can you post a pic of...
...v700. I think its Achilles' heel is the film holders; the 120/220 holders are dreadful. After much disappointment I sprung for a BetterScanning.com 120 holder and a sized-to-fit piece of anti-Newton's rings glass. The glass holds the negative flat and the film holder allows for fine height...
...and it's not that you are someone not knowing what hey are doing.I hate negative scanning.I's the worst way to get an image in my opinion.I'd rather stay analog.Sorry for your troubles;been there myself with Tmax and that was flat:)
...problem is. This new Tri-X doesn't dry as flat as the old stuff did and curls so bad even after I used the ANR glass I bought from betterscanning, it wasn't heavy enough to push the strips flat. It curls up and you can't put the strips the usual way, emulsion side up as it's even worse.
I'm...
It is a shame that Epson cripples their scanners with such crummy film holders. I did find the BetterScanning holders with ANR glass to be a worthwhile purchase.
I may be of benefit to order some of the ANR glass from betterscanning. He has holders for medium format and has the glass that will fit the standard V600 holders for 35mm from what the website says.
