John used mainly a Nikon F2 with an eye level viewfinder. No automatic system. He describes in his interviews that he has learned exposure and focus by experience. He presets the settings based on the scene that he might anticipate to come up, as many old school photo reporters were known to do.

Maybe yes. I just build what I had in mind for some time, and it seems to work rather well. Its easy to work with and does what I want it to do :D

I cut little marks in the corners. i feel it in the dark and therefore know what film is which. I count them.

I dont assume intermittency to not matter. I just think that at the duty cycle of my switching together with the afterglow of the led phosphor, there is not enough time for the photontransfer to degrade. At lower freuqencies yes, this is an issue but at 20khz i doubt it is. But I will test it...
