super symmar 110XL. Unfortunately I noticed some white spots inside the lens on the surface of the glass.
see attached photo!

I have been in contact with Schneider and they offer no help at all.
Do you have or can help with a solution for the lens?

If it's fungus, can it spread to other lenses?

Those are bubbles in the black paint on the elements' edges. Harmless except to resale value. Often called Schneideritis.

No I don't think so. I have lenses with Schneiderits, this looks different, the bubbles is on the glass and not on the far edges.

Ignore it, your lens is not sick and won't spread to other lenses. Most (all) Schneider lenses and many other brands as well exhibit this with age. Like Dan said, totally harmless and won't affect resale value with people who actually want to use the lens. Those who just want to look at it could be a different story......L

+1;harmless, which is the reason Schneider didn't care;use it and stop looking at it;It doesn't belong in a display case.It belongs on a camera:cool:

I've got a Fuji lens with Schneideritis or I guess it would be Fujiitis. The only thing it hurts is resale price slightly. Nice for buyers, bad for sellers so don't sell. Use it and enjoy!

... and a doctor with doctoritis.

Not bad like the white spots on the back of my retina (macular degeneration), dammit!

I'm aware of Schneideritis, see photo. On the 110XL lens, it looks very different.

They forgot to clean their lenses properly before blackening the edges, I'm guessing. Has Schneider ever said what the actual cause is?

Jason, they say nothing. The problem has been around since at least the 1950s. Boyer's lenses are worse than Schneider's. Fuji LF lenses have it too.

Interesting. I could almost bet I know what they specifically use for blackening. I call out blackening at work of course, but haven't seen "bubbling" in extended life testing. Makes me think it's in the prep.

Not so fast, everyone.... There was a unique cementing issue with both 80's and 110's for awhile, a mfg flaw distinct from "Schneideritis". Schneider knew about it, and a number of lenses were replaced during the relevant warranty window. This kinda spoiled the reputation of these otherwise excellent lenses, though they corrected it. You'd have to know the affected batch per serial no. But they were glued in a different manner from most lenses due to the aspheric construction. "Schneideritis" is merely a benign failure of the rim blackening on the mount, unrelated to this issue.

Thanks for the info, it's most likely as you say. I have a 80XL with a higher serial number that looks good. Not fun to have bought an expensive lens that you think will last a lifetime.
