My 8x10 is also my 4x5, so she never gets dusty! Shooting more 4x5, though, as I've got too much of it stocked up and need to start using it. Also, the price of HP5 8x10 up here is pretty brutal now.

Heyo, only a month and a half late but just checking in. I'm in Vancouver proper. I shoot 35mm, 6x6, and digital. Mostly black and white, and getting into black and white printing as well.

Are we more rare here? I know maybe one other Andrew in Vancouver but I knew at least 7 in Ontario.

It has been too cold in Vancouver to do much out-door activity. Went out today temporarily to do pics of the frost. That's about it though. Most taken of Grouse Mtn from my balcony so clear out from the cold and nobody driving. See the pics in my signature.

The Darkroom Group, Coquitlam

Hi Andrew and all
Our group is still making progress (since Dec 2009) with 16 active members now. Silver printing and alternative processes. My husband and I are also learning carbon with digi-negs and have had valuable help from Andrew O'Neill.
Winter 2016 CPHT-Pacifica Mtg (alternative photography and plans for 2016 Alt Photo symposium in Vancouver) meets 3 times per year. Sat 23 Jan 2016 in Bellingham area, usually 1 - 4 pm. When I have address details I will post in APUG Vancouver.

Heyo,

I just stumbled upon this section of the forum after being a long-time lurker.

I shoot 35mm and 6x7.

I'd be happy to have some sort of Vancouver photo meet-up.

Hey Dev. 'Not sure how this would be w/ Andrew, but if I you get a chance to meet up w/ Andrew, I'd jump at the chance. I'm learning too & Andrew has likely forgotten more than I'll ever know. Sometimes there's just no substitute for the face to face & the learning potention would likely be hard to equal.

OK. Looks like Vancouver might be over it rain season. Spring/early summers are prime for Lower Mainland outings.

Maybe it was the five years that I worked in that province next door (with its unending, brutally cold, soul-destroying, winters), but I have yet to ever experience weather here at home that has prevented me from heading out with a camera (perhaps I'm too hardcore?). Most of the time, the bulk of my work is in color (70/30, perhaps); in the winter months, or during a prolonged period of precipitation, I tend to shoot more black and white (Monsoon season here is generally 75/25, or thereabouts, black and white to color). Irrespective of the weather, or the time of year, I've always got a camera at hand. This city is simply too beautiful for me to risk missing a potential photograph.

I grew up in Saskatoon, so I know what cold is... but I certainly would not call it soul-destroying. I'd much rather be out in the blue sky and sunshine (almost everyday there!) at minus 30C, than dark, gloomy, grey, 24/7 constant rain. Now THAT'S soul destroying... although summers make up for it!

Not so much from the cold it is just the unrelenting rain and constant rain puts a damper on everything as the cameras I have are NOT waterproof 100%. Kind of uncomfortable to set up a 4x5 in driving rain. And also I have been out here for 20 ish years from the oil province next door with its COLD winters that never end. But at least there we had more sunny days than here. I have a camera with me 99% of the times I am out as the Lower Mainland is a very beautiful photogenic place.

"d_w_c": I can appreciate your attitude towards the rain re shooting with a view camera; I don't find using a Hasselblad in the rain all that pleasant - using the waist-level finder, anyway. Generally, during the monsoons, I stick with either my Nikons or one of the Leicas (none has ever protested about a little moisture); if the rain is more of the mist variety, the Hasselblads come out as well. Perhaps, as I said, I am a little too hardcore; every day, and every situation, has photographic potential in my mind. There again, after enduring the isolation and brutal cold of five Deadmonton winters, maybe I am just, at a certain level, making up for lost time? lol I have never learned to appreciate the cold and physical discomfort of winter; I don't care how blue the sky is! When one has to be concerned whether or not one's car will start, whether it will be possible to commute safely to and from work, etc...no thanks! I took a $25K pay cut to return home, and have never regretted it even for one brief millisecond!
